Bear update: The Bear says We Have Defeated The Amazon Queen Party. TR says,, “She played dirty tricks to no avail.” Moose say, “Just like you, Bear!” Lou says we will have a Dirty Tricks Party. We will serve the Amazon’s Dirty Foods. The Amazon says, “The Amazon Queen has escaped with her Load Of Pirates.”
We woke up to sun. Will it last? No! It got cloudy. The temperature in Hurricane Mills climbed to 99.

We woke up at 7:30AM. We got dressed and ate breakfast. We loaded the car in the steamy heat. We checked out of room 123 at 9:53AM. The first pit stop was exit 42 Pilot. I found postcards. The second pit stop was at McDonalds exit 56. We stopped for lunch at the McDonalds at Jackson at exit 80A. Then we looked for exit 108, which was the next McConalds where we stopped. Now we’re looking for another truck stop of the kind that abounds on I-40. We got off at exit 126 at a Shell Station, not as modern as the others. We finally get off the road for the day at the Best Western Hurricane Mills at exit 143. The first thing we see is the Log Cabin Restaurant. We went to dinner at the mountain southern eaterie down the hill from the Best Western Hurricane Mills. Kenny says it’s the best restaurant of the trip so far. I ordered a ham steak. Kenny ordered fried chicken. Gary had catfish and hush puppies, the like of which we haven’t seen since our days in Durham. The dog had takeout chicken strips. Even the cat gobbled it up. It’s a little bit of the south. The dog got messy stuff on his paws from walking along under the trees behind the property. We had to give him a bath and wash out the tub even though it wasn’t bath night. Now he’s on top of his dog camp mat on top of the bed. Kenny went to get scouring powder at the Pilot travel center next door. You do the strangest things on a trip.
We got an email from the Village Inn in Harrisonburg canceling our reservation because they weren’t able to pre-authorize the card. That’s one of my bugaboos, something I go to trouble to prevent. I pay in cash for just that reason. Now we are reworking our reservations again. It seems to be a daily event, a daily preoccupation. We’re substituting a Ramada Inn, which we should have found to begin with if we’d done a little bit more research.
We didn’t like the La Quinta East Sycamore View in Memphis at exit 12C, and we’ve been staying at a string of La Quintas night after night because of their pet policy and the fact they don’t charge pet fees. It was too urban and vertical. We had to fight to get on the ground floor. Maids were making noise in the hallway well into the evening. They made nasty comments about the dog. The CP selection was the worst I’ve seen. The breakfast room was too small. We didn’t even want to eat in there. Only when we were ready to leave did we discover the door in the back of the building that we could have used to take the dog for a walk. In short, we won’t be back here any time soon. At least they had a guest laundry!
Exit 108 on I-40 was the exit for Shiloh Military Park. It was also the exit for Parker’s Crossroads and Pickwick Landing. Shiloh is 51 miles south near the Mississippi border on the Tennessee River. That reminds me that we’re getting back to history. Out in Arizona there’s no history, just rocks. That reminds me, Williamsburg and Jamestown are coming up. Just keep heading East, young man.

Dog/Cat Report:

Sabaka is getting to be a McDonalds doggie. He has stopped at most of the McDonalds restaurants crossing the country from Arizona to Tennessee. McDonalds ought to show him on their ads on the internet. Sabaka’s picture ought to be up in lights. He would form a nice contrast with those golden arches since he’s a black lab. You can see our dog out on every patch of green lawn sniffing the flowers and grinning waiting for his quarter pounder with cheese for lunch. He even eats the bun.
The cat is envious of the dog’s burgers and all the takeout from restaurants of all kinds. We have to save a sample for him and let him taste the takeout from Ruby Tuesdays or IHOP or Applebees or McDonalds.
The Supreme Court split on the Arizona Immigration Law case. I don’t really care about that one. But on Thursday they are coming down with the one about the mandate. I don’t care what they rule. I know it’s not legal.
Still no contract . . .
What next?
