If I Were May Or Trump:
If I were May I would not stop making a point to the Russians until the point is actually made. You cannot have Russia attacking England with chemical weapons and endangering innocent civilians in peace time. If you accept that sort of thing and don’t make a point of it, who knows what the Russians will try next.
If I were in charge of the US which I am not, I would announce that the Russians were teaming up with the US to fight dissident elements in other countries around Russia. For instance there are lots of “stans”. I would say we had decided to build an American air force base in Siberia and thus a British air force base, too. I wonder what the Russians would really do. Would Putin try to stop us? Would he attack? Actually I doubt it. I think he would pretend to go along with it because he had no choice.
Also in Russia this would make him immensely popular. There is nothing the common everyday Russians would like better than Americans and British people bringing money and jobs. America in particular is NOT on Russia’s traditional enemy list. If Putin carried it off, he might become as famous as Peter the Great in Russian history who was the most western leaning czar. But sadly the US isn’t that interested in Russia to help prop it up like this.
