Will Cheops Books LLC find itself in Yellowstone this summer standing in front of Old Faithful Geyser? Certainly that is what happens to Dora and Edward in the upcoming historical thriller Old Faithful Plot set in the ominous year 1933 when Hitler first came to power. They are looking for a place to get rid of the Lawrence maps and hand them over to Churchill’s agent sent from Great Britain.
What a choice of locale! Hitler thinks so, too. The Dictator thinks he has discovered time tunnel under the geyser basin that will lead him back to ancient Rome. He wants to eliminate a certain philosopher/historian by the name of Pliny the Elder who first defamed his German ancestors. He thinks that will change history and Germany will win the First World War, putting the Dictator in an even stronger position in Europe of the 30’s.
In addition he wants to threaten the USA. If Dora and Edward do not hand over the maps, key to world domination, he will blow up the geyser basin and Old Faithful Geyser and set off a chain volcanic reaction in the only supervolcano in North America. It will blow the whole country sky high!

In Map Plot, soon to be published by Cheops Books LLC, the hero of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series, Lieutenant Sir Edward Ware, must undertake a spy mission to Venice for Winston Churchill. In the early 1920s Adolf Hitler is coming to power in the new National Socialist Workers Party. His financial backer is trading magnate Herr von Wessel. Edward must find a trail of letters between the two at Herr von Wessel’s palazzo in Venice. When he gets the goods he has to escape fast, but in his day and age one hundred years ago there is nothing faster than the Orient Express that slowly wends its way from Venice to Paris. The time it takes allows ample space for intrigue. Herr von Wessel and his new wife, Helga, go after Edward on the train. The big confrontation occurs in the dining car. And he still had to take a ferry to Britain and then another train to London to reach Churchill! But if Edward had the advantages of the modern Eurostar Train that goes from Brussels to London practically at the speed of an airplane, Edward could have gotten there in a flash and no one would have been the wiser.

Dora Benley is the only daughter of Robber Baron Winthrop Benley, a Pittsburgh industrialist of the early twentieth century. A way to understand her influence and wealth is that she was as wealthy at that time period as President Donald Trump is right now. Her wealth is important to the plot of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series. When her husband, Colonel Sir Edward Ware, must suddenly dash abroad or rent a cottage or sail across the North Atlantic Dora’s vast wealth is always there to assist him. At one point the Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin and the Chancellor of Germany, Adolf Hitler, ask her to hostess the new German Ambassador Ribbentropp and his entourage at her estate, Ware Hall, in the south of England. Only she can do this because she can afford the 20,000 pound bill for the lavish evening. Only she has a house big enough to sleep the entire delegation. It has often been said that money and politics are in bed together. Here in the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series the marriage of Dora and Edward Ware is a perfect illustration of that truism.

Winston Churchill was appointed Lord of the Admiralty during the Great War or the First World War in Britain. He was in charge of sending the rescue ships that never arrived on May 7, 1915 when a German torpedo sank the Lusitania off the coast of Ireland. It was the most spectacular defeat that the statesman ever experienced in decades of public service. It could have sank his career permanently. People would never have heard of the Winston Churchill who pulled Britain through World War 2, fighting Hitler all the way.
So when Churchill met Lawrence of Arabia, who was one of his most devoted followers, he heard about the map plot and how the German Kaiser was trying to get hold of the key to world domination. He immediately saw that the Germans who had almost torpedoed his politiical career along with the famous ocean liner should never get their dirty hands on these maps. Even after the Great War he fought alongside Colonel Sir Edward War, the hero of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series, and T. E. Lawrence, or Lawrence of Arabia, to keep them forever out of the hands of the rising star of the National Socialist Workers Party —- Adolf Hitler. He directed a team of secret agents loyal only to him and not to the Baldwin government or to the government of Neville Chamberlain. He conducted his own brand of very nasty foreign policy between the wars until in 1940 he himself finally became the most famous Prime Minister of the twentieth century.
Churchill certainly earned his hallowed place in the Character Directory of Cheops Books LLC.

Will Cheops Books LLC visit Tallinn, Estonia on the Baltic Sea Coast? Tallinn is not only the capital of Estonia but the cultural hub of the country. Certainly there is a lot to see from the Old Town with real cobblestones to a defensive tower to a Gothic town hall from the Middle Ages. St. Nicholas’s Church is from the 13th century. And all is right on the very northern sea.
If you are cruising that way this summer all the way to Tallinn, Estonia ad perhaps beyond to St. Petersburg, Russia itself, be sure to stop in. Will you see someone from Cheops Books, LLC? Wait and see . . .
Where will Cheops Books LLC find itself this coming summer? The contest to second guess the small press opened on February 1 and will run until May 1 when the winner will be announced. You could be the lucky guesser to find yourself with a $25.00 gift certificate for amazon.com. On your summer travels you could use it to stock up on beach reading on Kindle. So please write in using the CONTACT form at http://www.edwardwarethrillers.org.

As everybody decries Donald Trump’s new immigration and travel policies they should take a moment to pause and reflect on what used to be in Dora’s America. Dora Benley, the heroine of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series, was born in 1894 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which in those days was a magnet for immigrants from Germany and Eastern Europe in particular. It also attracted a number of Italian and Irish immigrants. But suddenly as the First World War began “over there” America began to shut its doors to all these immigrants. They felt the threat from abroad, all those dictators and people who didn’t think like Americans, at about the same time that the western frontier was closing after a period of expansion that had lasted from before the nation’s founding until that date. Dora could have said as did her contemporaries born at the end of the Victorian era with its limitless ideas of expansion and progress, “The world has become a far nastier place”.
From the time of the First World War until the mid 1960’s America’s immigration policy was to severely limit anyone at all coming into the country. There was exceptions for people’s spouses, for instance the war brides of World War 2. But immigrants were no longer thronging into the country as they had in the early years of the twentieth century. This was the time of America First, funded by Dora’s father, Robber Barron Winthrop Benley. America wanted to turn its back on the world and almost didn’t enter World War 2. It took all the ingenuity of the four term President FDR to get the country to fight for the allies, a battle dramatized in the recently published Cheops Books LLC novel, Dark Horse, about the candidacy of Wendell Wilkie and the Republican Convention in Philadelphia in 1940.
In the mid 1960’s Congress came up with quotas for immigration for each country. Now Donald Trump is attempting to come up with a system for keeping track of Muslim immigrants and travelers who visit or migrate to this country in the wake of 9/11 — another America First event. But it is hardly as extreme as the days of Dora’s America.

Chasing around on the ground in Europe and America in the 30s and 40s Dora and Edward Ware, agents for Churchill, never got caught in a passport flap at the border that interrupted their travels, delayed them, etc the way many Muslims are getting caught today due to the new executive order by Donald Trump. The secret agents of yesteryear needed freedom of passage and quick access to escape hatches or they might be caught by Hitler’s agents such as Helga von Wessel who were out to rob them of the Lawrence maps, key to world domination.
Today even the average Joe from Kansas City won’t want to be at the airport being delayed in a long line. He might not be a Muslim but he will wish he had never taken the trip all the same. Even Cheops Books LLC got delayed in Boston by Homeland Security two years ago for no particular reason except bureaucratic delay. We wouldn’t want to repeat it again for anything. We have photos of long lines. No one could disembark from the Queen Mary 2 either even if you were a citizen of the USA.
Dora and Edward would always be turning around watching their backs. If they had to wait in a long line Helga and Herr von Wessel, Hitler’s best agents, might sneak up behind them and take a shot or two. Instead they might have decided that it was better not to travel at all under today’s odd circumstances. To avoid a passport flap they would think it was the better part of wisdom to act like Candide and stay at home instead cultivating their own garden.

Prime Minister May is making her first visit to the United States to visit President Donald Trump who was inaugurated only one week ago today. She made a speech to a Pennsylvania audience about the “special relationship” between America and Britain which began one hundred years ago this year in 1917. That was the year that the United States under Woodrow Wilson entered the First World War on the side of Britain to fight the Germans. They did it again during World War 2, reinforcing and cementing the relationship.
This very real history is mirrored in the relationship of the hero and heroine of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series, Dora Benley, an American heiress, and Colonel Sir Edward Ware, a British freedom fighter who spied for Churchill and fought the Germans in two world wars. They meet the day after the sinking of the Lusitania. Dora was on the doomed ship and rowed ashore with her family, vowing revenge on the Germans. Edward was already involved in a map plot against the German High Command and the Kaiser. They formed an alliance which later became a marriage to fight the Germans together. It is the foundation relationship of the whole series just as May claimed that the US Britain special relationship was the foundation of the world in the twenty-first century.
