Prediction For The Future: History Repeats Itself:
My Prediction for the future: The EU was the immediate result of the fallout from World War 1 and World War 2, the main political and military events of the twentieth century. The European countries had had enough by the 1950’s and wanted time to get their economies going again. But as the years went by, the various European countries became more prosperous. The people in Europe start to forget the immediate past and the lessons of the world wars. Nationalism starts to raise its ugly head again, at least ugly if you don’t like this sort of thing and remember what it led to in the past.
Nationalism in its modern sense had its origins in Europe. I think it was the Sun King, Louis XIV, who first brought France together as a nation state. England under the Tudors wasn’t far behind. For instance, Henry VIII breaking with the Church in Rome was exercising his nationalist muscles. Even countries like Germany and Italy fell in line during the 19th century with unification movements.
Two years ago I would have said the EU would last forever. My prediction has since changed with all this Middle Eastern terrorism in Europe and the Syrian refugees pouring in. I think this is helping to ignite nationalist movements all over Europe. Heck, Martin Luther was able to get the German states to function together to eject the Turk, Suleiman, who came knocking on the gates of Vienna. And to do this he had to interrupt principalities at war with each other in the build up to the Thirty Years War. Yes, Europe is remembering its old identities again.
Britain, the most prosperous European country after WW2, has found its old identity first. It wants to eject immigrants and build walls, I guess. Soon other states may follow in the general breakup of the EU. Either that or the solid core of the EU that might remain will be all Germanic. Germany, Austria, Belgium, Holland, and the Scandinavian countries are all Germanic in origin. On Roman maps you find reference to a tribe in Greater Gaul called the Belgii, for instance. Parts of France were Gauls. The line at the Rhine River was imposed by the Varusschlacht in 9AD, but still these were all the same sort of tribes. In the future if this part of the EU survives it may be only to assert a new kind of German nationalism. You might find that this sounds like a nightmare for the future. But the more things change, the more they remain the same.

The Varusschlacht is the subject of an upcoming Edward Ware Thrillers at War novel entitled the Cherusci Plot.

This morning when I woke up I usually follow the QM2 to see where it is anchored that day. I knew it was on a world cruise and had just been in Korea. Where would it go next? I was surprised to find that the website said that QM2 was “not on a cruise”. In the past this has meant that the ship was doing something unexpected such as looking for somebody who jumped overboard such as in August of 2015, the month after we were on the ship or in July of 2015 when we were last on the ship on the 175th anniversary cruise coming back to New York and we ran into the mysterious skiff at sea episode. But when I mentioned it to Gary he had a different explanation this time. Quite different and surprising!
Gary found that the Queen Mary 2 which is currently on a world cruise is being used in Theresa May’s first foreign trade deal. it was announced by David Dingle, the Chairman of Maritime UK and the Chairman of Carnival UK, and John Hayes, the Shipping and Ports Minister and Member of Parliament, and the Trade Minister, Mark Garnier, that they are going to have a three day mission to Shanghai March 28-March 30. David Dingle is going to host a luncheon aboard the Queen Mary 2 which will be anchored there in Shanghai. He will host Chinese officials and government ministers. Where will they eat? We’ve been discussing it and have decided that it would probably be in the Queen’s Room on deck 3. I should send you pictures. It is usually a ballroom but it adjacent to the main dining room and eatery, the Britannia Dining Room.
This is supposed to help improve trade and investment relations between the two nations. “The maritime industry has a unique role to play in making Brexit a success,” Dingle says. “As Britain goes out into the world determined to increase exports and sign ambitious trade deals, Maritime UK has a unique responsibility to make Global Britain a reality,” Dingle says. He addes, “We are ready to do so.” It is all scheduled around the time that Theresa May is supposed to trigger the Brexit, Article 50, tomorrow, Wednesday, March 29.
Unique how Britain always uses cruise ships for political purposes such as Queen Mary 1 in World War 2 and now Queen Mary 2. Queen Mary 1, the original Queen Mary liner, is featured in Captive at the Berghof, one of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series.

Multi Cultural Themes In Edward Ware Thrillers at War:

The person I am describing and blond-haired with ruddy cheeks and a hunting rife was my next door neighbor on Commonwealth Drive in Charlottesville, Virgina 22901. His name was Mr. Godwin. He had a wife, Mrs. Godwin. They weren’t from central casting at Walt Disney. They were from the south of England just like a lot of their friends that I met, too. The American South is full of these very British types who migrated to the New World. They look exactly like their relatives on the other side of the Atlantic in England, particularly the south of England. This is true from Virginia all the way down to northern Florida and Alabama thrown into the mix, too.
I am on the mailing list for the Pig in the Wall in Southampton. There is also a Pig in Bath and a Pig at the Beach and a Pig in the New Forest, too. The advertising literature I get online depicts English types having barbecues and get togethers. They don’t look very ethnically diverse to say the least.
When I was in the south of England in 2012 and 2015 I saw lots of people in the Salisbury area and the Southampton area and inbetween in places like Downton who looked like neighbor Godwin. The area didn’t look that multi cultural and multi racial to me. It certainly didn’t remind me of places in California which is supposed to be the most multi cultural place on earth. (Even in places in California such as the Sierra Nevada it isn’t very multi cultural and in certain suburbs such as Santa Rosa north of San Francisco it isn’t either).
By the way neither did lots of the people I met on the autobahns in Germany look very ethnically diverse. If anything they seemed more ethnically pure than the people I met in England. You would see families with all blond children, something that is much rarer in the US where at least some of the children will end up with brown hair, too.
I think this is why the refugees from Syria create such a problem in western Europe. The societies don’t know how to assimilate them. Apparently even Manchester in England has lots of refugees from the Middle East who are causing problems and creating a stir. It shows that the Old World is very different from the new.
In the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series we have various ethnic, multi cultural characters such as the villainess of the series, Helga von Wessel, an Arab from the outskirts of the town of Petra, who later marries and German, Herr von Wessel, ad moves to England to cause all sorts of trouble for the hero of the series, Colonel Sir Edward Ware, and his wife, Dora, Lady Ware. Helga’s bastard son by Edward Ware, Leopold, is at first torn between his two opposite cultural identities before he works it all out and becomes Edward’s adopted heir to his title and fortune.

Trump and Churchill: The Challenge

Lots of Presidents here get stuck in the same situation. It is SO COMMON that it doesn’t really attract that much attention. Most of Trump’s supporters won’t even realize that he didn’t get a vote on his first health care bill. They will notice that he got his bill through Congress about NASA instead and stuff like that. People here are easily distracted. The office of President isn’t designed to make the occupant look ineffectual. And no, Cheops Books LLC doesn’t think it will have an effect on the trade deal with Britain just as it didn’t have an effect on NASA. Even right now Trump could get 100% of his bills through Congress with support from both Democrats and Republicans if he pitched at them spending bills where more largesse, circuses, etc were being distributed. And some Presidents do this. They change what they like just to look good and start getting a 100% batting average.
Churchill had problems earlier in his career when he was First Lord of the Admiralty during the Great War. The Lusitania sank under his watch. He was supposed to send British warships to rescue the passengers or to shelter them from the enemy submarines on the way to Queenstown so they could disembark safely. He didn’t make it in time and had to resign. Only his own political ingenuity dictated the course that he must take to stage a political come back so he could one day become the most famous Prime Minister of Great Britain in all of history. Trump faces the same challenge.

English: The Language of Shakespeare and the Edward Ware Thrillers:
I don’t know the exact rules either, but I heard from an academic who was studying the subject that the Republic of Ireland requires students to learn Gaelic, and Northern Ireland offers it as an elective. It would probably be more useful at this point to learn Latin than Gaelic even though that is also a dead language. Latin has more ties with English and the evolution of English and other major European languages such as French, Spanish, and Italian. And dead language though it be it has more classics written in that language than Gaelic does. Even major poets who supposed Irish independence such as William Butler Yeats wrote in English. Many of them knew Latin, too.
Unfortunately I agree with the two chaps who were fans of British cricket who were traveling on the train in Hitchcock’s movie The Lady Vanishes. The station attendant was calling out trains in all sorts of languages first. Finally he got to English. The two chaps quipped, “Well, why didn’t he say that to begin with?” I always support having everybody learn English. You could even make up a humorous rejoinder to the German question, “What’s wrong with the Germans?” The answer would be of course than they don’t speak better English.
English is the language of Shakespeare, not only the greatest writer of English but also of any language. It is fortunately also the language of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series including Key to Lawrence Special Edition, Dark Horse, Captive at the Berghof, and soon the Salisbury Plot. The hero of the series, Colonel Sir Edward Ware, was the old-fashioned British sort who would never have questioned speaking English. He thought that was what he was fighting for in the Second World War.

There Is More Violence In Europe Than America:
One of our readers from England has objected that while you have spectacular terrorist attacks such as the one in London on March 22 really the danger of violence is greater in America. He quotes the statistic of 340,000 Americans killed by gun violence since 9/11. This was Cheops Books’s response:
It seems that you are getting off topic a lot about violence in America. We were talking about terrorism, I think. But getting off topic always introduces new things to talk about so it is OK. It reminds Gary of a course he took in college at Haverford called Violence in America by Roger Lane. It was a topics course. At the end of the course everybody wrote a substantial paper. Gary wrote about violence in the farm fields in California in the 1930’s a la John Steinbeck. This course covered the time period from the Colonial time period to the present day. Gary said violent strikes and protests were common. So were race riots. Then there has been a tradition of the “kooky murders”, the looney fringe violence in America that you don’t get in Europe. Gary says that it is reported on here more than any other place for one thing. That’s why you know about it. Other societies might repress it.
I don’t know where you get your figures. Remember the Devil can quote not only scripture for his purpose but also statistics broadcast by the media trying to prove something or make a point. But assuming for a minute that you are accurate and it could be proved objectively that 340,000 Americans have been shot dead. The question to ask is WHERE. America is a big country in square footage. A lot of this violence would no doubt occur in what you would call slums and districts of cities where racial minorities live. For instance in Tucson there is a district called South Tucson where hardly a white person is ever seen. Supposedly the police won’t even go there. It is Mexican gang territory. No real estate agent will go there either and if you are white nobody will sell you a house there. That is where the vast majority of the slayings and killings take place. This doesn’t mean that a white person going grocery shopping at the A J’s fancy store in the Foothills, the swankiest address in the Tucson area, is likely to be shot dead. So consider this when talking about your statistics. Every city in the country of any size has the same set up.
By contrast the terrorist violence in Europe in the past 2 years seems to occur in swanky areas such as Nice, France on the beach or in the airport in Brussels where travelers go and businessmen, too. It occurs in Paris and in the West End of London. That is why it is worrisome to Americans who are used to violence in slums only.
Certainly there was more violence in Europe than America in the days of Edward Ware Thrillers at War. World War 1 and World War 2 took place on European soil, not American.

It sounded very eerie when the papers said “London is under attack” just as if it were World War 1 or World War 2.  It sounded scary, too. Frankly I don’t think it is possible to carry on as normal under such conditions. You might say you are doing so. But in reality measures are being taken. Things are different. The mood and attitude aren’t the same at all. For instance, this London terrorist attack will mean increased security. Homeland Security here keeps on growing apace under every President since Bush. New regulations keep on getting issued for airlines. The latest here is something about no computers or tablets on certain flights. It gets to the point that you will do everything you can to avoid the situation that causes such inconvenience. In other words you won’t fly unless you absolutely can’t avoid it. You might avoid downtown London or New York unless you can’t avoid it again. I remember after 9/11 people said they were going to stop going to shopping malls. Suddenly after 9/11 tourism to places like Yellowstone started to spike instead of trips to cities. Of course it depends on the individual. Some individuals will act as you say and stubbornly insist on carrying on the same schedule terrorism or no. But their numbers get thinner all the time.

I am still confused why countries like Britain and America act the way they do and go after their own citizens instead of foreigners in reaction to terrorist attacks. Romans would NOT have behaved like this. If they knew there was an enemy called ISIS they would have leveled them and wiped them from the face of the earth. They might have taken slaves and the women and children would have been raised in Roman i.e. American/British ways. Not that I like such military activity myself, but at least it spares the native population. I’m beginning to think that the West in the grip of the World War 1 syndrome (which assumes WW2 was just part of WW1). WW1 is the hundred years war that is still going on. They question all their values. They become pacifist, etc. I don’t know when the Great War will ever end. Then maybe you can recognize enemies as enemies and stop imposing on your countrymen and your native populations.

Of course the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series starts with the opening rounds of World War 1 when the Lusitania gets torpedoed in the novel Key to Lawrence Special Edition.

Could There Be A Map Plot Nowadays?
When you think of the grand map plot that is the subject of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series, you realize that it could not exist nowadays in 2017. Edward and Dora are fighting the Germans from the early days of WW1 when the Kaiser was sending agents after the maps to the heyday of World War 2 when Adolf Hitler became the enemy. But the important thing is that they were always fighting against enemy countries with organized governments and armies, navies, and air forces. They were not fighting against terrorists.
Terrorists would not be interested in detailed military maps about how to take and defend certain prime locations in Europe. The reason? They don’t command armies. They would not have cared about the brilliance of T. E. Lawrence in figuring out about the shifting soft sands of North Africa just outside Cairo that became key in fighting the Battle of El Alamein. For the terrorists there are only hit and run covert attacks. There are no grand battles.
We are reminded of all this changes in the world scene with news of today’s terrorist attack on the Houses of Parliament in London right in the shadow of Big Ben and right on Westminister Bridge that connects the South Bank with the city. Edward might have known how to fight Hitler, but he would not have known how to combat an enemy that wants only destruction for destruction’s sake. The Lawrence maps would not have helped him at all. So they remain fixed in their own period of history which thankfully is not today, Wednesday, March 22, 2017.

For The Royal Table
How did the author get all the details of the banquet correct in Captive at the Berghof: Part 1? When you read the scene you find out that Dora and Edward served a multi course banquet to the new Ambassador from Germany to Great Britain during the Third Reich, von Ribbentrop. They used six cups and a complicated array of silverware just as it would have been done by the upper crust in England during the 1930’s, the last age of elegance.
The book For the Royal Table: Dining at the Palace by Kathryn Jones was used as a guidebook. It provides all the details about dining at Buckingham Palace in London. One of the menus suggested by this book was used for the infamous banquet at Ware Hall where von Ribbentropp has been instructed by Hitler to force Edward and Dora to give him a Lawrence map in exchanged for their kidnapped little daughter, Thomasina.
Look it up. You will find out what George III liked to eat for dinner. It may have been served at Ware Hall to von Ribbentrop. Read Captive at the Berghof: Part 1, an Edward Ware Thriller at War novel.
