Calexit and Trump
In the US secession, including Calexit, is illegal. Voting for secession is also illegal. This is why California cannot get it on the ballot for initiative and referendum, and remember California was once part of New Spain, that land where the Catalonians now want independence from Madrid. If California would try to put it on the ballot it would be held up by the courts forever and ever. Beyond that we get into the movie script I was suggesting about Calexit.
Obviously there is nothing to Calexit. It doesn’t matter about what businessmen you heard chatting. This is all jocular stuff. It is NOT serious. It is like me talking about it as cocktail party conversation. You could also discuss it in an academic situation. It is not illegal to DISCUSS it even quite openly. But not only is it illegal to act on it, nobody WOULD seriously act on it if they are sane.
What such a thing would do to the business community of California is movie stuff. Part of my suggested movie script would have Tim Cook of Apple fleeing to Ireland where Apple keeps all its cash because the Feds were after him for donating to the Calexit cause and thus leading Trump to seize Apple and all its assets. Of course to get back at Trump in the movie script Tim Cook (seemingly safe in Ireland before a spy gets him) turns off all the iPhones in the US. Trump is giving an order as he speaks into his iPhone and it goes blank. It doesn’t work anymore. It is Apple’s revenge.
Obviously Silicon Valley and the Valley of California with all that agri business and the wine country, too, is worth too much money to risk it all on political silliness. What about the stock holders? They would revolt! The business of California is too well integrated with the business of America to seek independence even if it were possible which it is not. And who are the Californians? People move in and out of the state every day. It is a shifting political base.
Also California is in effect already occupied by Federal troops. What about San Diego, home of the Pacific Fleet? What about Andrews Air Force base? Army bases everywhere too? And what about Federal enclaves such as Yosemite National Park? Sequoia National Park? Redwood National Park? There is also a huge Federal Recreation area in downtown San Francisco right by the harbor. Very strategic, right? Good for snooping on all those California rebels.
Things in history don’t happen for whimsical reasons. California doesn’t seek independence because it makes good party table conversation. There would have to be a real underlying cause, also a reason why now? And when you think of it, California has never had a better time to be part of the Union. I think the biggest money maker is the port at Long Beach where they conduct the trade with China. The exports comes from all over the US and Canada. The imports go to all the states, not just California.
This is where Dora’s father, Winthrop Benley, would be getting the rubber to make his tires one hundred years ago in the first novel in the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series, Key to Lawrence: Special Edition. And Mr. Benley certainly was a patriot who contrasted America with Europe, that land where countries do break up, the land of Balkanization.
The secret to America is that things here are too well integrated to break up. That is what holds the union together like cement.

Donald Trump Becomes Dictator of California With Help From Crassus:
Calexit, unlike the Spanish situation with Barcelona and Catalonia in rebellion and ready to declare independence which is all too reminiscent of the Spanish Civil War, would make a good movie. You could have a fantasy what if. It could be quite humorous. It could also make an excellent action thriller all about Donald Trump and the Californians.
But the reality of the situation in California is that the Calexiteers won’t be able to get the proposition on the ballot. There are limits to initiative and referendum! As soon as they try, it will be legally challenged, and the objection will be upheld in court. Even the Ninth Circuit will not be able to help them t here. And since such an initiative to seek independence for the Gold Rush State is illegal, the permission to put it on the ballot won’t be granted. If it got to the point where the attorney general of California had to decide whether to put such a proposition on the ballot, he could be impeached if he agreed to put it there and let Californians vote on it. At the very least he could be disbarred.
What is most amusing is that Calexit is motivated by a dislike of Trump and if they exited they would give Donald Trump more power, not less. He could appoint the governor of California himself WITHOUT congressional consent for instance. He is the head of the army, navy, and air force all of which have bases in California. San Diego for instance is the home of the Pacific Fleet. Get it? Donald Trump is the commander and chief of the armed services. He would be in charge of rebellious California almost as if he were a dictator. This is what would make a good movie.
Trump could even bring in his trusted aide who has secretly been living in the Lincoln Bedroom of the White House ever since last December 2 when I first reported it in my blog post “Trump and Crassus”. Marcus Crassus, the Roman, could go riding into California on his horse and chariot to take up residence in the governor’s mansion as the imperial legate and give sage advice to Trump about how to be Dictator of California Roman style.

Merkel and May Should Listen to Trump
Angela Merkel and Mrs. May both have recently won re-election with very narrow margins that have required coalition forming. Last autumn Donald Trump was elected President by a much greater margin. The two ladies should listen to him in his message about immigration.
In Sunday’s German election for chancellor, Angela Merkel “won” but it will be her last term. Her center-right party, the Christian Democrats (CDU) (along with their sister party in Bavaria), had the worst showing since 1949, winning only 33% of the vote. The reason: Merkel’s decision in 2015 to open Germany’s borders wide to nearly a million refugees from Syria and other parts of the Middle East. Approximately one million Germans who had voted for the CDU in the last election decided to vote for the new anti-immigration, right-wing party, the Altenative for Germany (AfD), which received 13% of the vote, enough to surpass the 5% threshold for representation in the German Bundestag.
Sunday also saw Donald Trump announce his administration’s new travel restrictions, which will replace the Trump Administration’s original travel ban, as of October 18, 2017. Oral arguments on the original travel ban executive order are due to be heard by the United States Supreme Court on October 10, 2017.
Merkel’s vision of a super-cosmopolitan Europe that can easily handle the assimilation of millions of refugees from other parts of the world has been put on permanent hold. Meanwhile, Trump’s vision of the world – as he recently confirmed by his address to the UN General Assembly – as a collection of nation states who look out for their own interests – including by placing restrictions immigration – is on the rise.
The reason is obvious. Merkel’s vision is simply unrealistic. Neither Germany nor Europe’s other nation states, can digest unlimited immigration from countries that do not share the Western culture and values of Europe. Trump’s vision, on the other hand, allows the nation states of Europe and the rest of the world to maintain their singular identity and thereby thrive.
England, Germany, and America are all settings in the Edward Ware Thrillers at War novels published by Cheops Books LLC. Hitler’s Agent, book six of the series, will be published on October 15.

Brexit Reminiscent of WW2:
Germany and England are always quarreling with each other. The Brexit negotiations are only the latest round. The British should sock it to the Germans.
Maybe the British government reflects the populace — extremely divided. Maybe it wouldn’t be possible to get any kind of unified government right now no matter what party is in control.
Why would May go to Florence to make a speech about Brexit? Why not make it in London at No 10 Downing Street and have it broadcast? US Presidents don’t run off to foreign countries to make speeches about the US. They make speeches about the US relationship with a foreign country when visiting that country such as Trump’s speech in Poland this past summer. Otherwise they make speeches either in the Oval Office or in some special location in the US chosen for that purpose. Before 100 years ago when Wilson attended the Paris Peace Conference it used to be considered improper for US Presidents to leave the country at all during their term of office. Even now US Presidents don’t leave the country for a vacation.
What do you mean that Britain can’t “keep the lights on” or “the food shelves stocked” without remaining in the EU. That is just what the anti-Brexit faction wants you to believe. Somehow Britain managed to keep the lights on and the food shelves stocked during WW2 even when they were fighting the Continent.
This is what May should do: Just say that we are leaving the EU as of March, 2019. Either you accede to our demands that Britain doesn’t have to pay any extra money to the EU and doesn’t have to have the European Court of Human Rights supervising anything or on that day the North Sea Trade with Germany will cease. She should NOT back off from that statement and when the time comes let Merkel do all the fancy dancing around to keep the North Sea Trade with England going. Merkel would come up with something, believe me, even if only to say that it will continue another five years in its present state while “we” continue to work things out. In other words May should not concede anything yet, nothing at all.

Merkel Fiddles While Hamburg Burns:
Here is one of my photos of the concert hall in Hafen City in Hamburg in the Harbor Area on the Elbe River surrounded by photos of rioters. This is where Trump and Melania Trump attended Merkel’s concert for the G-20 meeting on July 7. We sailed up and down the river four times in 2012 and 2015 and really liked the place. Hamburg looked very modern with all sorts of very neatly kept buildings and lots of greenery lining the streets. The Elbe River was well populated with swimming beaches and beach hotels and houses. There was also a Lion King hall where they kept on playing Disney’s Lion King in perpetuum. We passed the old Cora Verlag Building that used to house the editor I dealt with when publishing 48 books in the Mystery and Mystery Thriller Lines. We even found a fascinating bookstore that specialized in ships and the North Sea and bought a Hamburg calendar and lots of postcards. I wish I could have purchased one of his North Sea calendars, but alas they were too big to fit in my suitcase! We rented a car here twice and returned here twice to board the Queen Mary 2 in Hafen City. The place seemed prosperous and upbeat.
Now we hear how the ambience of the city of Hamburg has been shattered by violent riots in the streets. Policemen are battling with non capitalists. Ever since we left Europe two years ago there have been nothing but terrorist attacks and now this. Melania Trump was apparently trapped in her hotel room by the extreme violence. So was the Australian Prime Minister. You would think that the Germans of all people would be better at keeping order in the streets. It is really shocking and makes me fear that Europe isn’t safe anymore. Tanks in the streets of Hamburg? The army called in? Military helicopters hovering above the conference site? It’s really too much.
I think part of the problem must be Merkel’s immigration policy and all these Middle Easterners wandering around Europe committing terrorist acts. But these rioters run deeper. They remind me of the groups that Hitler was fighting 100 years ago in the streets of Munich, the German communists. I looked up photos of Hamburg on July 7, 2017, and they remind me of World War 1 and World War 2. Absolutely shocking! It rattles me to the core just to look at people tearing about the city we were driving through only two years ago, driving across the bridge out of town and returning to a hotel on the outskirts, Zur Linda, the water wheel restaurant on the edge of town, the Hors Muhle, and then returning to the harbor area. And all Merkel can do is play classical music? Somehow her reaction seems disconnected and ominous like the legendary image of the Emperor Nero fiddling while Rome burned.
Hamburg plays a role in the Edward Ware Thrillers at War. Hamburg is where Dora and Edward end up at the end of the novel Map Plot before returning to Britain together. It is the farthest expansion point of the Roman Empire into Germany. The Romans were trying to reach the Elbe River in the Cherusci Plot when the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest stopped them. Among them was one of Edward’s ancestors.

Trump and Lawrence of Arabia:
Gary claims that the grateful Syrians have given Trump a new nickname in northern Syria. It is Abu Ivanka al-Amriki. It means “Father of Ivanka, the American”. This is reminiscent of those days during the Arab Revolt during the Great War, or World War 1, one hundred years ago. Naturally it reminds me of the Arabs calling T. E. Lawrence “El Orens” among other titles. T. E. Lawrence under General Allenby helped to liberate the Arabs of the day from the Ottoman Turks. Lawrence and Allenby defeated the Turks in the Battle of Damascus in the autumn of 1918, one hundred years late next year. Are the Arabs expecting Trump to liberate them from the tyrant, Assad, and the Russians. If Trump can do this by jawboning the Russians, trying to separate them from the Iranians and their client Dictator Assad, and he can fire a few Tomahawk missiles now and then to show he means business, so much the better. Maybe they won’t even have to have a Battle of Damascus, which was quite dramatic. The Turks deserted, and Lawrence rode into town in an old car the next day. I bet Trump won’t have to even ride into Damascus. By the way Lawrence visited Damascus, too, and had various other adventures with the resident Turks in town. Trump can hopefully do it all by using diplomatic means as well as his new Secretary of State, Tillerson. If Trump does succeed in ousting Assad and defeating IS in the Middle East maybe the Arabs will call him by an even more memorable title. Maybe someday he will have a movie made about him like Lawrence of Arabia.
Lawrence of Arabia, Sidi Lawrence, El Orens, is a major character in Key to Lawrence Special Edition published by Cheops Books LLC.

Wilson to Trump: 100 Years War:
Is The End Of Terrorism Near?
In the Edward Ware Thriller Series Dora and Edward are always reflecting that Hitler is everywhere and they can’t escape him — a kind of terrorism. And if it’s not Hitler it is Hitler’s spies or earlier the Kaiser’s spies looking for the fabled Lawrence maps, key to world domination. Dora finds a saboteur in her shed in Pittsburgh in the South Hills. She ends up having to shoot him herself. At other times saboteurs interrupt them on the beach outside New York City, Coney Island. At another time the spies find them in a cabin in the woods outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. They follow them to Yellowstone. They steal items from their house in England at Ware Hall. There is nowhere Dora and Edward can go in the world to be safe.
Oddly enough it feels like that right now for real in the US and the world in general. Terrorists nowadays might not be after the Lawrence maps. But they seem to be after YOU and everybody else just to make a political point or whatever. Starting two years ago they focused on scaring everybody in Europe. It all seemed to have to do with the migrant crisis. More refugees were on the move than at any time since World War 2. But because Europe, particularly Germany, opened its doors to them Europe now seems to be vulnerable to terrorists in a big way. The Mediterranean in particular seems to be a hotbed of unrest. If you can say that the migrant crisis helped to lead to Brexit, then it helps to explain by there was just recently a confrontation at Gibraltar between England and Spain, the entrance to the Mediterranean. Apparently migrants have used the Mediterranean to cross in boats. The French Riviera town of Nice was shot up in a big way. And now we have Trump launching missiles from a ship in the Mediterranean, making it a war zone, not just a zone of terrorism.
Even if Trump’s missile strike helps to deter the use of chemical and biological weapons by big states, it does not do much to deter terrorism. In the days before the strike there was a terrorist attack in London on Westminster Bridge. The day AFTER the missile strike, another terrorist struck in Stockholm of all places. What is a terrorist doing in Stockholm in Scandanavia? You would think it would be the last place they would go. Are they going to appear in Oslo or Copenhagen next? Is there no place safe? The top of Mt. Everest? The North Pole?
Hopefully the terrorist situation will be resolved somehow during the next few years. I view it as the last stage of the Great War which has turned out to be a 100 years war indeed. All the liberation movements and revolutions that it unleashed have to become history someday. That some day should be soon. But somebody like Trump will have to take the lead. His opening volley is good. He made a big splash with his missile strike. But the big question is what will he do next?

Trump and Churchill: The Challenge
Lots of Presidents here get stuck in the same situation. It is SO COMMON that it doesn’t really attract that much attention. Most of Trump’s supporters won’t even realize that he didn’t get a vote on his first health care bill. They will notice that he got his bill through Congress about NASA instead and stuff like that. People here are easily distracted. The office of President isn’t designed to make the occupant look ineffectual. And no, Cheops Books LLC doesn’t think it will have an effect on the trade deal with Britain just as it didn’t have an effect on NASA. Even right now Trump could get 100% of his bills through Congress with support from both Democrats and Republicans if he pitched at them spending bills where more largesse, circuses, etc were being distributed. And some Presidents do this. They change what they like just to look good and start getting a 100% batting average.
Churchill had problems earlier in his career when he was First Lord of the Admiralty during the Great War. The Lusitania sank under his watch. He was supposed to send British warships to rescue the passengers or to shelter them from the enemy submarines on the way to Queenstown so they could disembark safely. He didn’t make it in time and had to resign. Only his own political ingenuity dictated the course that he must take to stage a political come back so he could one day become the most famous Prime Minister of Great Britain in all of history. Trump faces the same challenge.

Dora Benley is the only daughter of Robber Baron Winthrop Benley, a Pittsburgh industrialist of the early twentieth century. A way to understand her influence and wealth is that she was as wealthy at that time period as President Donald Trump is right now. Her wealth is important to the plot of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series. When her husband, Colonel Sir Edward Ware, must suddenly dash abroad or rent a cottage or sail across the North Atlantic Dora’s vast wealth is always there to assist him. At one point the Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin and the Chancellor of Germany, Adolf Hitler, ask her to hostess the new German Ambassador Ribbentropp and his entourage at her estate, Ware Hall, in the south of England. Only she can do this because she can afford the 20,000 pound bill for the lavish evening. Only she has a house big enough to sleep the entire delegation. It has often been said that money and politics are in bed together. Here in the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series the marriage of Dora and Edward Ware is a perfect illustration of that truism.

High society girl with umbrella
As everybody decries Donald Trump’s new immigration and travel policies they should take a moment to pause and reflect on what used to be in Dora’s America. Dora Benley, the heroine of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series, was born in 1894 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which in those days was a magnet for immigrants from Germany and Eastern Europe in particular. It also attracted a number of Italian and Irish immigrants. But suddenly as the First World War began “over there” America began to shut its doors to all these immigrants. They felt the threat from abroad, all those dictators and people who didn’t think like Americans, at about the same time that the western frontier was closing after a period of expansion that had lasted from before the nation’s founding until that date. Dora could have said as did her contemporaries born at the end of the Victorian era with its limitless ideas of expansion and progress, “The world has become a far nastier place”.
From the time of the First World War until the mid 1960’s America’s immigration policy was to severely limit anyone at all coming into the country. There was exceptions for people’s spouses, for instance the war brides of World War 2. But immigrants were no longer thronging into the country as they had in the early years of the twentieth century. This was the time of America First, funded by Dora’s father, Robber Barron Winthrop Benley. America wanted to turn its back on the world and almost didn’t enter World War 2. It took all the ingenuity of the four term President FDR to get the country to fight for the allies, a battle dramatized in the recently published Cheops Books LLC novel, Dark Horse, about the candidacy of Wendell Wilkie and the Republican Convention in Philadelphia in 1940.
In the mid 1960’s Congress came up with quotas for immigration for each country. Now Donald Trump is attempting to come up with a system for keeping track of Muslim immigrants and travelers who visit or migrate to this country in the wake of 9/11 — another America First event. But it is hardly as extreme as the days of Dora’s America.
