Point Horror: The Surfer and Pool Party

As Halloween gets nearer and nearer, we think not only of Horror Week on Goodreads but of the old Scholastic Point Horror Line and its wonderfully scary books for teenagers and adults who like good, clean fun and big scares that make you scream. Cheops Books, LLC has republished several of these classic Point Horror titles by Linda Cargill such as The Surfer and Pool Party. Soon under her pen name, Dora Benley, we will be republishing Dark 1 and Dark 2, which were Point Horror titles in Great Britain.

Jessie had never seen her before. The beautiful girl who seemed to get a thrill out of surfing on a stormy sea. Maybe she’d been lucky in the past, but Jessie saw the girl’s luck run out. Jessie saw her drown.

So who’s the new girl in town? The one who doesn’t know who she is — or where she came from. The one who seems to cast a spell over everyone else she meets? Has the beautiful surfer come back from the dead? Or is it something else?

This young adult horror novel by Linda Cargill was originally published in the Scholastic USA Point Horror Line and the Scholastic UK Point Horror Line. It was also published by Cora Verlag in German as the Sea Witch. There was also an Italian edition. After selling 200,000 copies worldwide this bestselling novel is now available in a Kindle edition, published by Edward Ware Thrillers YA, an imprint of Cheops Books, LLC.

Mary’s Gone On Promotion:

Mary’s Gone is on special promotion on Amazon Kindle starting today and continuing for the next five day into the weekend. Download your free copy of Dora Benley’s young adult thriller set on St. Simons Island today. But hurry! A promotion this good won’t occur again this year.

Chill Out On St. Simons Island. Creepy St. Simons Island is the setting with the live oaks with drooping moss and big roots that jut up out of the ground and look three hundred years old. Mosquitoes the size of your fist buzz near your leg and vampire-like drive you back into your car. Alligators with yellow eyes spy you from the nearest swamp, and this is the land of swamps. You won’t be able to find your way around the black water with reeds growing out of it any time soon.

Judy has the creeps. Nothing like this brutal stabbing and strangling has ever happened on St. Simons, a peaceful island off the coast of southeast Georgia. She’s seen such things only on TV. But here it is, staring straight back at her from her iPad!

There’s been an attack on a teenage girl her own age at Dunbar Creek, near Ebo Landing in the swamps. It’s a site often visited by ghost tours because of its ghoulish history. Legend has it that a girl from plantation days often appears with a lantern in hand searching for her lost love.

Whether there’s a ghost or not in Mary’s Gone, Judy has no idea. All she knows is that she’d better figure out what’s really going on. The voice that calls her on her cell phone, the one claiming to be the girl from long ago named Margaret the Wanderer, promises that Judy will be her very next victim.

Mary’s Gone is a young adult thriller published by Edward Ware Thrillers YA, an imprint of Cheops Books, LLC. Stories out of the past. It is one of several novels set on St Simons Island. If you enjoyed this book, you will also enjoy other young adult novels by Dora Benley including Rose Red, Latin Lessons, Dark 3: Special Edition, Murder on Spirit Island, and Back to Venice.

The Mystery: Point Of View in Cheops Books LLC:

A first person mystery such as “I dreamed I went back to Manderley” in Rebecca, yes, you can certainly have it. But most mysteries and almost all thrillers are third person limited nowadays. If your heroine is called Jan Friedman, everything in the story is what Jane knows and nothing can be admitted that she wouldn’t know. This is the “limited” part.

If you have just third person you have Charles Dickens and writers like that. And of course when it suited Dickens he would break into omniscient and tell you all about his characters, too. Moralize. Stuff like that which contemporary readers wouldn’t like.

All of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series and all the Edward Ware Thrillers YA novels are third person limited with a handful of first person stories thrown in for good measure. The Dark Series by Dora Benley coming out this autumn is all third person limited. So are Hitler’s Agent and Captive at the Berghof: Part 1 coming out on October 15 and on December 15 respectively. Try them out. You will see what we mean.

Did Pliny’s House Look Like The Getty?

Pliny the Elder obviously lived in what we would call a Governor’s House in Roman Trier. What did such a place look like? None of the original Roman villas survives to this day intact, not in Trier, not in Italy, and not in Great Britain. In such places you don’t usually have more than a few standing columns or perhaps a floor full of mosaics to give you a clue of its former grandeur.

Probably the best example of such a villa nowadays exists in a place that Romans never visited and Romans never dreamed about. Such a villa has been painstakingly reconstructed on the California coast, land of dreams and elaborate reconstructions such as Disneyland and Hollywood.

It is no mere fantasy. In fact, it is an elaborate reconstruction of the villa of Calpurnius Piso, the father-in-law of Julius Caesar and father of Caesar’s last wife, Calpurnia, the one with the dreams and nightmares in Shakespeare’s play. It would be very similar to anything that Pliny would have owned. Both men were intellectuals of their day. Calpurnius Piso was a Stoic philosopher. Pliny the Elder was the author of the Natural History, the first of all encyclopedias in the western tradition.

This California villa was reconstructed by John Paul Getty, the billionaire who had a hobby of collecting Greek and Roman antiquities on a large scale. He wanted to build a place to house them. The Getty Villa opened in 1974. The Los Angeles Times interviewed John Paul Getty. Getty said: “It is fortunate that the United States has one ancient private building which is authentic in spirit. One could say go to Pompeii and Herculaneum and see Roman villas the way they are now — then go to Malibu and see the way they were in ancient times.”

Pliny also owned a villa on the seacoast along the Bay of Naples, so this comparision seems appropriate. It is inspirational to think that Pliny strolled through his peristylium and viewed the classical sculptures you find at the Getty.

Pliny the Elder is a character in two upcoming volumes of the Edward Ware Thriller Series: Old Faithful Plot and Pliny: A Novel.

Bianca mourns for her old friend Doc who helped her overcome her fear of the dark after being the only witness to a brutal murder on St. Simons Island. He was driven out of town two years ago when the locals concluded that he must be the killer. She last saw him parachuting from a plane escaping from the law, a fall he couldn’t have survived. She’s moved to California with her employers, the Shipleys, and taken on a permanent babysitting position with Little Katie. Suddenly there’s a kidnapping attempt on the rich little heiress that Bianca is employed to protect. To the rescue comes a tall, dark young man who reminds her of somebody she’s lost. But it just couldn’t be . . . After all, he’s dead. And after all . . . he’s supposed to be the bad guy.

Dark 3 concludes the Dark Series for young adults, first published by Scholastic UK. It also ties into and concludes the Edward Ware Thriller Series of historical novels about World War 1 and World War 2 with the biggest surprise ending of all time. The novel will be published by Cheops Books LLC on September 15.

Teens rarely need an excuse to stay up late, but The Dark by Dora Benley would give pause for thought to even the most steely nerved youngster. A genuinely gripping horror story. Approach with caution.

Harvey Reminds Me Of My Visit To The Gulf Coast:

I was reading about Hurricane Harvey and gawking at photos taken of a very flooded East Texas. Like everything else it is a matter of geography. The Gulf Coast is full of low lying lands. It is also very flat. This is ideal for flooding. The land in this area absorbs the water and turns into a swamp. This area has lots and lots of natural swamps, too. I know. I drove through them. We also got stranded there when we came back from Tucson on the Sunset Limited, the Amtrak Train, the first time we visited there and got stuck in South Crawley, Louisiana. What an experience! The swampers came out of their houses to help us. I remember them feeding us bologna and cheese sandwiches.I led a group of passengers across the street to knock on doors and ask to use the bathroom. And remember New Orleans, Louisiana is below sea level. You would not want to live on the Gulf Coast.

Cheops Books LLC writes novels about various locales. Several young adult thrillers, Edward Ware Thrillers YA, are set along the Gulf Coast. Bienville comes to mind. It is the only novel set in New Orleans and takes catastrophe for granted, especially when aided by supernatural intervention.

On November 1 Cheops Books LLC will publish Dark 1 by Dora Benley, the novel that was once part of the Scholastic Point Horror Series. Bianca Winters is babysitting Katie Shipley, the newborn heiress across the Street when one Friday night the lights go out and she hears the housekeeper screaming. She goes upstairs to confront an intruder and save the baby from her crib. The housekeeper falls to her death. But when her memory starts to come back two years later she gets the feeling he is waiting out there to kill her.
On November 8 Cheops Books LLC will publish Dark 2 by Dora Benley, the book that was once part of the Scholastic Point Horror Series. Bianca mourns for Doc, her medical advisor upon whom she came to depend until she found out that he was the murderer. But now there is a new face in town, Dr. Byron Kingsley from Great Britain. He seems to take Doc’s old place. But somebody is still after her and Little Katie. She must flee the country. But even that may not be good enough.
On November 15 Cheops Books LLC will publish Dark: A Trilogy, a collection of three young adult thriller novels in the Dark Series: Dark 1, Dark 2, and Dark 3: Special Edition. Teenager Bianca Winters had no idea what was in store for her in the next few years when she took on a babysitting assignment across the street with Little Katie Shipley. That night her whole life was to change forever as a killer roamed around in the dark upstairs. She had to save the baby while the housekeeper, Mrs. Ingersoll, fell to her death.
In the months that followed the murder, Bianca comes under the wing of her new medical advisor, Doc, who helps her recover from the horrible experience. She falls in love with the young man only to have doubt cast on his motives by circumstances that hint that he himself is the killer. When he goes on the run, she has to still believe in him somehow. How could she love a murderer?
Katie Shipley’s parents move to California and take Bianca with them as her live in babysitter. Bianca thinks that Doc is dead, killed trying to escape from the authorities. But then just as a strange older gentleman from England appears and tries to kidnap Little Katie, a young man who reminds her of the one she has lost materializes in her life again. He shows her what has really been going on all these years behind the scenes, why Mrs. Ingersoll was killed, and what the bad guys want with Little Katie. The trilogy ends with the biggest surprise ending of all time.

They’d better do something fast before Thomasina truly becomes Hitler’s daughter.
