Carthage Must Be Destroyed In Color:

Daniel Teran has finished the book cover for Carthage Must Be Destroyed —- in color. Cato stands in the Roman Senate addressing the populace. Cato is soon to be a major character in the upcoming historical thriller Carthage Must Be Destroyed by Dora Benley.

Cato the Elder ends every speech in the Roman Senate with the words, “Carthage must be destroyed.” He is a survivor of the Second Punic War fifty years before when Hannibal won the Battle of Cannae and almost marched on Rome itself. Cato reminds the Romans that Carthage has finished paying its war reparations to Rome and is now refurbishing its navy. It could sail against them again just as Hannibal himself had crossed the Alps a generation before.

The son of another senator, Gaius Antonius, is picked by Cato to follow him to Carthage to assess the situation. Gaius Antonius sketches the harbor. His eyes light on a ship that is being built. It looks like the finest of its fleet.

When Cato orders the Carthaginians to send one hundred hostages picked from the youth of the noble families of Carthage to Rome to be kept at his latifundia estate, the Princess Tanit arrives. She tries to charm everyone —- for awhile. But soon she and the sketches and maps that Gaius Antonius drew suddenly disappear along with all the hostages.

This sets off a multi-nation chase to get the drawings and maps back again. Cato wants to show the drawing of the fine naval vessel and the threats it represents to the Roman Senate. They are on the verge of declaring war. Cato and Gaius Antonius want to push the Roman Senate and people over the edge. Will they make it in time, or will the Carthaginians gain an advantage? Will Princess Tanit and her cohorts escape, or will they get their just deserts?

Enter Helga and Herr von Wessel, Hitler’s top spies. They warn Colonel Sir Edward Ware and Dora that either they hand over the top secret maps, key to world domination, or they will blow up Yellowstone National Park. They will turn the famous geyser basin into volcanic rubble – and the rest of America, too, which would be buried in volcanic ash just like Pompeii. Salisbury Affair: Thrills And Chills:

On May 4 Cheops Books LLC will publish Salisbury Affair, book two of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series. There will be a Goodreads Giveaway on the same day for Salisbury Affair, which is soon to be open for entries to win one of 100 available Kindle books. Also on May 4 Cheops Books LLC will host a Facebook Party from 2PM to 9PM Pacific Time. The subject under debate will be the Salisbury chemical poisoning incident that became so notorious this past month. This Russian incident has defaced the area where Edward Ware had his estate, Ware Hall, and contrasted terribly with the pastoral setting and Salisbury Cathedral where the Wares were married. However, Salisbury Affair is an historical thriller novel and the thrills and chills obviously continue to the present day.

Who is the saboteur following Dora about on the doomed Morro Castle in September of 1934? Who is the terrorist who set fire to the first class writing room on the ocean liner? Who followed Dora and her new husband, Colonel Sir Edward Ware, to Salisbury Cathedral on their wedding day? A creature in a black robe is wielding a sword in the balcony and clanging the bell. The freak seems to summon the legions of the dead who surround them in the hills peppered with bronze age burial mounds, who seem to rise from the cloisters in the center of the cathedral where unknown dead from the Middle Ages still reside. Why does she see her new husband handing money over to the saboteur on her wedding day in a hidden garden of Ware Hall? What does it mean to be married to Colonel Sir Edward Ware? When she finds out the truth it will change Dora’s life forever.

Salisbury Photo Album:

Cheops Books LLC is going to publish the historical thriller and second volume in the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series, Salisbury Affair, on May 4. In honor of the town of Salisbury, England where Dora and Edward are married on September 30, 1934, Cheops Books LLC is going to set up a section of the website to feature the town of Salisbury, Salisbury Cathedral, and nearby Stonehenge that we visited in 2012. We will use photos that we took ourselves.

Who would ever have thought that such a peaceful, quiet corner of England could turn into a world crisis center? In fact, part of the tension of the novel Salisbury Affair is created by the contrast between the pastoral setting and Helga and her manipulations in 1934. Helga besieges Dora’s and Edward’s wedding at the cathedral by disguising herself and throwing things down from the balcony. Then, right after the wedding, she almost murders Dora on her wedding day at the cathedral. Who would think that in 2018 Russia would do even better than Helga in defacing the place with its chemical weapons? But such are world events and history itself.

New Cover For Armistice Plot:

Cheops Books LLC is working with a cover artist by the name of Daniel Teran to design a new cover for the upcoming historical thriller Armistice Plot. It is to be published next November 11, 2018, the one hundredth anniversary of the end of the First World War, World War 1, or the Great War.

We have settled on a cover design. We are going to have a picture of October 1, 1918, the day when Damascus fell to the British under Colonel T. E. Lawrence and General Allensby. T.E. Lawrence will be depicted driving into the Syrian capital of Damascus in a Silver Ghost Rolls Royce. This is not made up. It is what actually occurred and is evidenced by a surviving photo which we have included as part of this blog post. Sitting beside T. E. Lawrence will be his fellow British officer, Lieutenant Edward Ware, the hero of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series. The background will be of course Syrian. We have settled on an atmospheric photo of Bosra Sham including an arched gateway complete with oriental rugs.
The cover has not yet been drawn so we cannot yet show it to you. But we here at Cheops Books LLC will keep you posted on its progress.

Chapter 13: Wall Street Swastika: Putlitz to the Rescue
The German Embassy in London, otherwise known as Prussia House, seemed to be a seedbed of sedition and intrigue. They took up temporary residence at Winston’s London town house, Morpeth Mansions, to attempt to unravel what was going on. There was an uptick in activity there around the clock since the Wall Street Crash. That much was obvious.
After they had crashed the gambling party they had to be more cautious. No more would they be invited to the more Nazi-leaning events. They needed to find somebody who could slip in and out unimpeded and get information for them what the Nazis in London were up to, what their communications with Germany were like, and what was going to happen next so they could try to avert it or combat it.
Winston made a point of reaching out for contacts among his own contacts. He had the Prof down from Oxford to lunch one day. He suggested an old college chum of his name Putlitz. He had recently attended an Oxford alumnae event. Putlitz, an employee of the German Embassy in London, had been at the cocktail party. He had done nothing but complain about the rising power across the North Sea.
Winston, always a treasure trove of ideas, had another brilliant one. He summoned his wife, Clementine, down to London from the family estate at Chartwell in Kent. She was to arrange a dinner. The only guests were to be Colonel Sir Edward Ware, Mrs. Byrne, the Prof from Oxford, and this man from the German Embassy, su Putlitz. In other words, he invited only other members of the Lawrence map plot. He was clearly going to discuss business.
Putlitz shook his hand heartily and told Winston he had heard about him as a backbencher MP who almost all alone among the government and the British upper class was an enemy of the Nazis. Putlitz was dressed in the old style in a rather fussy fashion. He was a member of the German nobility, thus the “su” in his last name. He was from an old Prussian family with an estate in the country not far from Berlin, in fact situated about halfway between Hamburg and Berlin. He had always been proud to serve at the German Embassy since his family had much business and London and had spent much time there. He had a townhouse not far from Morpeth Mansions. But recently the German presence in England had been corrupted by Adolf Hitler, who was some sort of upstart from Austria who had appeared in Germany not long after the Great War. He had been imprisoned in Bavaria after the Putsch in 1923. Putlitz had thought he would never heard about the bastard again. And now here he was during the past few weeks creating an uproar all over Germany.
“Yes, and holding gambling events in the German Embassy in London of all things!” shuddered Clementine as she directed the server to present another glass of vintage wine to Putlitz.
“Edward always told me that the German Embassy was a staid place full of respectable people!” Dora agreed.
Edward nodded.
“That was under the old ambassador!” Putlitz cringed visibly. “But these days no one has any manners or sense of tradition anymore, least of all this Adolf Hitler character. He would not be above turning the Embassy into a brothel if it would provide enough money for his nefarious political activities.”
“Especially since the German government has been forced by Hitler to appoint Herr von Wessel as the commercial attache at the German Embassy,” Edward added. “That man has financed Hitler since before anybody ever heard about him. He goes back to 1918 and 1919 before Hitler even knew he was going to be a Nazi, Herr von Wessel had joined the party.”
“And that awful wife of his, Frau von Wesel, is even worse,” Winston wriggled his nose.
Clementine shook her head and sighed.
“This is why we need you to work for us,” Winston leaned closer to su Putlitz. “I can’t really pay you much for all the danger you will be risking, but we need the information badly if we are to do anything to counteract this rising star of the Nazi Party.”
Putlitz agreed. “That is why I came here tonight. I want to do something about it even if it costs me my family fortune.”
“That is the sort of fellow we need to hear from!” Winston called for his box of cheroots and offered one to su Putlitz. They toasted to Putlitz’s success.
“My family has always backed the old traditions,” Putlitz assured them. “And England has always been our greatest friend.”
Dora and Edward were having dinner with Winston and the Prof at Morpeth Mansions about one week later when su Putlitz sent a message by a trusted messenger to Winston. Winston tore it open and read it through silently first. Then he read it aloud as Dora leaned as close as she could to hear better:
“I want to warn you that Herr von Wessel and his wife, Frau von Wessel, are up to something big. And this is particularly heinous. Herr and Frau von Wessel are inviting the Prince of Wales to a private dinner to meet Nazi Party officials being sent there from Germany. The Prince is known for his lack of discretion and can be easily influenced and in addition has a big pocketbook. This private dinner at the Embassy is scheduled for this Friday. Sorry not to give you more notice. But we don’t want to involve a crowned head in what should be a major scandal.”
Putlitz

The Lincoln Highway: America Is The Same Everywhere
Also an observation from two years ago when we were driving the autobahns in Germany and in Belgium and Luxembourg. In Germany they had a law about putting a road stop service station or roadside eatery every so many miles. This vanished in Belgium and was not nearly as convenient. So they could not have had EXACTLY the same laws about their roads. Also Belgium had 24 hour lighting on the highways that was absent in Germany. I’d say that the conditions on the roads in America (and we drove those, too) are actually more similar. We kept on saying that at the time. In America you have lots of road stops all over the place and THEY ARE THE SAME BUSINESSES AND RESTAURANTS EVERYWHERE FOR 3000 MILES such as McDonalds, Burger King, Perkins Restaurant, Applebees, Ruby Tuesday, Denny’s, etc. In fact McDonalds and Burger King helped provide unity along the road across Germany, too — but not Belgium. The food turned distinctly French. We found Laughing Cow Cheese for sale.

Back in the days of the Lincoln Highway Dora and Edward drove for hundreds of miles seeing the same sorts of auto courts and food establishments along the big road. They were experiencing an American tradition totally unlike Europe in the historical thriller, Old Faithful Plot.

While they are hiding out from Dora’s husband at the Old Faithful Lodge in 1933, Dora and Edward are also hiding Lawrence maps that Churchill has given them and which Hitler would do anything to get his hands on. Enter Helga and Herr von Wessel, Hitler’s top spies. Hitler Strikes At Iconic US Symbol Old Faithful:
Old Faithful Geyser, unlike any other on earth, erupts on a regular basis in Yellowstone National Park, perhaps every hour to ninety minutes. Ever since its discovery in the mid nineteenth century after which it almost immediately became a national park, it has become a symbol of America and the American West, the American wilderness. It is famous the world over. It is also well known that it sits on top of an enormous geyser basin as well as dormant volcanic cone so large that all of Yellowstone National Park is nothing more than a volcanic caldera waiting to happen someday all too soon.
Adolf Hitler heard about this geyser basin in isolationist America in the 1930’s when figures like Thomas Dewey of the America First Party wanted nothing to do with European politics. He wanted to encourage America to develop a Dewey-like attitude. He wanted Americans like Dora Benley, daughter of America First fund raiser, Winthrop Benley, to hand over whatever documents he wanted so he could force the British to come to terms with him. He demanded that she hand over the Lawrence maps, key to world domination, that she just happens to have in her back pocket. They were given to her by her lover, Colonel Sir Edward Ware, friend of Winston Churchill, his arch enemy, though he is still a backbencher.
Dora and Edward hide in Yellowstone near Old Faithful, but that only encourages Hitler to threaten them big time. That iconic American symbol would destroy America by blowing up if they don’t hand over the maps in Old Faithful Plot, an alternative history thriller coming soon from Cheops Books LLC.
