Trump Acts On Roman Scale Against Syria:
It would be totally impractical to consult Parliament or Congress about the Syria strikes. First of all they have to be secret. They can’t be discussed in a public session of Congress or Parliament. In order to keep up with the US, England gave the PM the power to make strikes without consulting Parliament. The US President has evolved this power since WW2 even though if he wanted to start a formal war he would have to get Congress to agree the way Bush did.
Cameron consulted Parliament in 2013, and they voted it down, making Britain “look like a jerk.” The previous occupant at the White House added to the jerk quality of the lack of response by claiming he was going to consult Congress. That is why May did not do it this time and Trump certainly did not. Democracies are not good at making war. Think of the Roman Republic. During the Punic Wars, at first the consuls who were elected for one year each and were not doing well fighting Carthage. They didn’t have enough power to carry on the wars. They had to learn to appoint a Dictator for the duration of the war or they might lose. Finally they appointed Fabius Maximus. Even he did not stay dictator for very long. Cato the Elder during the Third Punic War had the power of being a Dictator without the title because of his speaking ability.
Finally the Romans got the idea in the first century BC and Sulla became Dictator when fighting the Athenians. This resulted in Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon and riding into Rome with his troops, not laying down his power at all. And finally Augustus became Princeps or first citizen of Rome, really the First Emperor. Battles required a chain of command and real authority.
Before the Romans the Greeks had a terrible time conducting military campaigns. Athens wasn’t a modern democracy. It was more like a democratic oligarchy. But it was disorganized, and their wars and battles often suffered from lack of real leadership. It is ironic that the greatest Greek general was Alexander the Great of Macedon who was a King.
During World War 2 Britain followed this Roman tradition and suspended elections for the duration of the war. Churchill was like a Roman dictator more than the US President was who had to stand for election no matter what. Churchill was the most successful British PM of the twentieth century.
No one would suggest that the common foot soldiers get to vote on the next strike in the war. So why should the populace of the country get to vote on the next moves? That is the same sort of nonsense.
Churchill is a major character in the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series. He appears in many different novels.

Facebook Party For Salisbury Affair:
Dora and Edward Ware were married at Salisbury Cathedral on September 30, 1934. The cathedral was a stone’s throw away from Edward’s ancestral estate, Ware Hall, which had been in his family since Roman times. Conquerors came to this area of England such as William the Conqueror in 1066. Conquerors went. But nothing much happened in this area of rural England until after the time of the Wares in March of 2018 the Russian government used it as a staging ground for a chemical attack. They were after a spy of all things, which is reminiscent of the action in Salisbury Affair and other books in the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series with the von Wessels, Hitler’s top spies, fighting the Wares and Churchill.
The Facebook Party on May 4 will concentrate on this one hundred year old issue of chemical attacks which started during World War 1. Indeed even Hitler was a victim of such an attack. Recently the US, Britain, and France staged a bombing raid on Syria for being a rogue state that still used such weapons against its own people under the aegis of Russia. The Salisbury Affair becomes more than just a story about Dora and Edward.
Who is the saboteur following Dora about on the doomed Morro Castle in September of 1934? Who is the terrorist who set fire to the first class writing room on the ocean liner? Who followed Dora and her new husband, Colonel Sir Edward Ware, to Salisbury Cathedral on their wedding day? A creature in a black robe is wielding a sword in the balcony and clanging the bell. The freak seems to summon the legions of the dead who surround them in the hills peppered with bronze age burial mounds, who seem to rise from the cloisters in the center of the cathedral where unknown dead from the Middle Ages still reside. Why does she see her new husband handing money over to the saboteur on her wedding day in a hidden garden of Ware Hall? What does it mean to be married to Colonel Sir Edward Ware? When she finds out the truth it will change Dora’s life forever.

Trump Listened To Only Half Of Crassus’s Advice:
Marcus Licinius Crassus was friends with the greatest military general of all times, Gaius Julius Caesar. So he ought to know what he was talking about when he gave advice to Donald Trump in the White House. What were they talking about? Syria, of course, and how to respond to the recent chemical attack.
Crassus has been living at the White House in the Lincoln bedroom since early 2017 when he moved in for the first time in 2000 years. He liked Trump and wished him well. He was after all, another mogul, another businessman, who wanted to get involved in politics just like Crassus in the first century B.C. when the Republic was busting up and turning into the Empire.
Crassus reportedly told Trump to do something sneaky. How Trump got bogged down in having international organizations certify that the Syrian President was responsible for the chemical attack on civilians, no one can guess. Crassus had not doubt told him that such a technique would be good if he were trying to hide what he was really doing a la Julius Caesar style.
Caesar once pretended that he was withdrawing his troops from Alexandria. He had certain ships load up supplies and pretend to be sailing back to Rome. Instead of attacking the palace where Cleopatra’s brother was holed up, he decided to feast and make merry in the harbor, dining before all his troops. Cleopatra’s brother decided that Caesar was a coward and ordered a banquet in celebration. After all the Egyptian troops got drunk, then Caesar attacked the Palace and took it with hardly a Roman casualty.
How could Trump emulate that? Well, after he called an international body into Syria and everybody thought he was too cowardly to attack by himself, he should order an air strike in Iran because they are helping to support the corrupt Syrian regime. Or perhaps he should even try to use a smart bomb to get Putin himself in his marble palace hidden away from view. That would be a biggie!
But if Trump has misinterpreted all his good advice from Crassus, it is very sad. But then American Presidents never were Roman generals, now were they?

New Cover For Armistice Plot:
Cheops Books LLC is working with a cover artist by the name of Daniel Teran to design a new cover for the upcoming historical thriller Armistice Plot. It is to be published next November 11, 2018, the one hundredth anniversary of the end of the First World War, World War 1, or the Great War.
We have settled on a cover design. We are going to have a picture of October 1, 1918, the day when Damascus fell to the British under Colonel T. E. Lawrence and General Allensby. T.E. Lawrence will be depicted driving into the Syrian capital of Damascus in a Silver Ghost Rolls Royce. This is not made up. It is what actually occurred and is evidenced by a surviving photo which we have included as part of this blog post. Sitting beside T. E. Lawrence will be his fellow British officer, Lieutenant Edward Ware, the hero of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series. The background will be of course Syrian. We have settled on an atmospheric photo of Bosra Sham including an arched gateway complete with oriental rugs.
The cover has not yet been drawn so we cannot yet show it to you. But we here at Cheops Books LLC will keep you posted on its progress.
