Travel and the Car:

Yes, there was a Chrysler Voyager, a Chrysler Caravan, a Chrysler Grand Caravan, and a Chrysler Town and Country. These were the original minivans in the days when Chrysler was the only producer. They eventually cut out the Caravan, the Voyager, and the Town and Country and continued with only the Grand Caravan until just about last year when they came out with the Chrysler Pacifica. We test drove that car last year and just a few weeks ago. It was tempting. I wanted to buy it especially since they had a hybrid plug in model which I thought was impossibly cool. It was supposed to give you 30 miles of electric car and then you went into hybrid mode, making it the largest car in the world that you can plug in.

But it had two fatal flaws. First of all it was way too high up. You had to climb up into with with running boards and that sort of thing. I don’t know why they do this. They have essentially ruined all the remaining minivan models with this sort of design. Also it was very expensive.
It had the cutest commercials and videos with the Muppets, though. If you go to the Chrysler USA website you will see what I mean. They are really promoting the Pacifica and it appears on the front page.
Yes, the Ford Flex which we purchased instead has a third row. That is where the dog should be riding. Behind the third row is the “trunk” with space for either suitcases or grocery bags. Inside the car it is very much like a minivan. The third row can disappear into the floor of the car giving you more space in the back for cargo.

Yes, the Flex is suitable for long distance travel just like a minivan. We bought our first minivan, the Chrysler Grand Caravan, that we owned and which we were to drive 100,000 miles. We bought the first minivan with the idea of driving to Tucson for the first time. (The year before we went on the train, which was the first time we ever saw Tucson). We ended up driving it to Tucson four times including the move there. We ended up driving it to Florida twice, Hilton Head three times, St. Simons Island twice, the Oregon Coast once, Yosemite twice, the Grand Canyon three times, and San Diego once. It took us a lot of places before we leased two Ford Windstars, bought an RV, then bought the former Nissan Quest 2007.

I almost forgot. We also drove the Chrysler Grand Caravan to Yellowstone and the Tetons, the same year that we moved to Tucson. I found a photo of the Grand Caravan parked alongside the Madison River near the West Entrance to the Park in West Yellowstone, Montana. Most of the trees you see are lodge pole pines. If you drive down the road to the end of the picnic ground along the Madison River and turn right you will head into the thermal basins and eventually reach Old Faithful.

Old Faithful is the setting for Old Faithful Plot, coming soon from Cheops Books LLC.

Parlez-vous Francais? Do You Speak French?

Do you know French? When I was in third grade I had a teacher named Maya Monsieur who taught children to speak simple French after school. I took the course. It was the only French I ever had. I still remember how to count to ten in French. I know a few simple phrases such as “Thank you very much” in French which came in handy two years ago when I found myself in French-speaking Belgium in Wallonia. This was in stark contrast to Germany. I am 100% ethnically German but I can’t speak one word in German. I was mute during my travels there while Gary did all the talking. I can sing a complete song about Napoleon in French to this day, but I don’t know what I am saying. So much for third grade French!

It is interesting to hear that Trump is visiting the Jules Verne Restaurant at the Eiffel Tower. I, too, visited the Eiffel Tower. I am sure you did, too. I didn’t go up in it. But I was there. I even have a photo. More recently Jules Verne has been influential on what I write. I really like Journey to the Center of the Earth for instance. Have we ever discussed Jules Verne before? My current novel Old Faithful Plot is actually influenced by that novel. Do you remember the ending? A Scottish scientist leads a team of scientists and one wife of a scientist under the earth. They discover the Lost Continent of Atlantis. Then at the end they get spewed up into the ocean by a volcano. Well, Old Faithful Plot is all about the Yellowstone supervolcano and what it might do someday. I need not say more.

New Book Trailer for Old Faithful Plot:

Old Faithful Plot, an Edward Ware Thrillers at War novel, has a new book trailer on the Cheops Books LLC website: Go to the home page, click on Old Faithful Plot, and the book trailer will be staring you in the face with Helga von Wessel, the villainess, simpering at you. Click on the video and enjoy the preview of coming attractions once the novel is published.
The book trailer evokes the feeling of fear and catastrophe that was so emblematic of that year, 1933, when Hitler came to power, FDR made his inaugural speech about the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, and the movie King Kong was raging through the movie theaters. Here a world catastrophe is evoked which we have tried to capture in the music and photos featured in the trailer.
While they are hiding out from Dora’s husband at the Old Faithful Lodge in 1933, Dora and Edward are also hiding Lawrence maps that Churchill has given them and which Hitler would do anything to get his hands on. Enter Helga and Herr von Wessel, Hitler’s top spies. They warn Colonel Sir Edward Ware and Dora that either they hand over the top secret maps, key to world domination, or they will blow up Yellowstone National Park. They will turn the famous geyser basin into volcanic rubble – and the rest of America, too, which would be buried in volcanic ash just like Pompeii. And if that doesn’t work they have an even darker plot up their sleeves, one that would change history itself.

Dark Dream Sequence In Old Faithful Plot Features Pompeii:

What on earth do Yellowstone National Park and Pompeii have in common? One is out West in America at 8000 feet above sea level surrounded by the Rocky Mountains and the other is in Italy along the coast on the Bay of Naples at sea level. One is there nowadays. One used to be there 2000 years ago in ancient Roman times. One is sparsely populated except by summer crowds of tourists. It is in a rural area far away from civilization. The other used to be an urban center of some size.

Both are dominated by volcanoes. That is the big similarity. Vesuvius was an active volcano in ancient times and is still an active volcano nowadays. It erupted during World War 2. There have been tremors and earthquakes since then. Yellowstone is dominated by all sorts of minor earthquakes that can barely be felt by the tourists. However, even more so than Vesuvius it is a supervolcano of enormous proportions and almost unimaginable destructive potential.

In the upcoming Edward Ware Thrillers at War novel Old Faithful Plot these similarities between Yellowstone and Pompeii have captured Adolf Hitler’s attention. He is chasing his enemy operative Colonel Sir Edward Ware and his fiancee Dora Benley all the way to the Rocky Mountains to capture the elusive Lawrence maps, key to winning the next war. He threatens the couple that if they don’t hand over the maps they are hiding from him he will attempt to blow up one of the geysers and Yellowstone itself to start a giant volcanic eruption that will remove America from the map and make sure she can’t interfere in any war.

But in a dark nightmare sequence Dora sees the ash flying about as it did in Pompeii two thousands years ago. She relives that horrible eruption and wonders what mankind is destined to suffer at the hands of the tyrannical Fuhrer.

Scheherazade And The Old Faithful Plot:

The new book trailer for the historical thriller Old Faithful Plot, a novel in the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series, is about to be released and appear on the website at it will feature a sound segment from the Sinbad and the Sea part of the Scheherazade Symphony by Rimsky-Korasakov from 1888. The original symphony was based on the 1001 Arabian Nights. It is all very atmospheric. We thought it was appropriate music as a background to Dora and Edward exploring the geyser basins in Yellowstone National Park. They drive through the park not knowing what to expect next. They don’t know when Hitler’s henchmen will show up to stop them and steal the Lawrence maps, key to world domination. The music adds to the eerie quality of boiling mudpots and steam rising out of the ground. It adds to the phenomenal, mystic quality of geysers exploding in your face and it also adds to the suspense. You don’t know what freakish thing will happen next in the thriller novel. As such we did not think we could find anything better to include in the book trailer, and we hope that after listening to it you will agree. Just tell us what you think of Scheherazade by messaging us on our website.

Tune Into The Old Faithful Webcam on the Old Faithful Plot Website:
When you are visiting the Cheops Books LLC website at, you can tune into the Old Faithful webcam on the website. Thinking it very appropriate we have included this webcam on the book page for the Old Faithful Plot. Given that the eruptions of this particular geyser are very important to the plot of the historical thriller novel that is part of the series Edward Ware Thrillers at War, we wanted readers to be able to watch the geyser while they were reading sections of the book or looking at other pages on the website.
Remember that 1933 is the year of FDR, Hitler, King Kong, and the Old Faithful Plot. And just to appreciate it all the more, watch the geyser erupt on the webcam.

As far as scientists know volcanism in Yellowstone began about 2.2 million years ago. There were precursors and then there were three giant eruptions larger than anything in recorded history. The precursors began with an eruption of the Junction Butte Basalt in the northeastern part of the park. Then the Island Park area in Idaho blew its lid. These oldest postulated eruptions were followed by the three big ones: One giant eruption occurred 2.1 million years ago. The second big one occurred 1.3 million years ago. The last known big one occurred 639,000 years ago.

The big ones were followed by intermittent smaller eruptions. One of these about 180,000 years ago was filled by the West Thumb area of Yellowstone Lake. This series of eruptions continued until about 70,000 years ago while the current Yellowstone Plateau took shape.

Right now Yellowstone’s magma chamber is 5 to7 miles beneath the surface.  It heats the overlying rock which heats the water and causes the geothermal reactions and Old Faithful itself. The magma also causes the Yellowstone caldera to rise and fall every few decades. More recently the uplift has gone on at an extraordinary rate. But it probably doesn’t mean you will see an eruption this year or next year. This is the pattern of the volcano. But like all good scientists they have to admit that they don’t know for sure.

The Roadside Geology of Yellowstone Country by William J. Fritz concludes by saying, “The inescapable conclusion from all this earthquake activity is that the likelihood that another major earthquake will occur in Yellowstone Country is guaranteed; it is simply a matter of when it will happen.”

All this geology about the Yellowstone supervolcano and Yellowstone’s geothermal areas is the background of the upcoming Cheops Books LLC historical thriller the Old Faithful Plot by Dora Benley. Find out what could happen next.

Wilson to Trump: 100 Years War:
Is The End Of Terrorism Near?
In the Edward Ware Thriller Series Dora and Edward are always reflecting that Hitler is everywhere and they can’t escape him — a kind of terrorism. And if it’s not Hitler it is Hitler’s spies or earlier the Kaiser’s spies looking for the fabled Lawrence maps, key to world domination. Dora finds a saboteur in her shed in Pittsburgh in the South Hills. She ends up having to shoot him herself. At other times saboteurs interrupt them on the beach outside New York City, Coney Island. At another time the spies find them in a cabin in the woods outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. They follow them to Yellowstone. They steal items from their house in England at Ware Hall. There is nowhere Dora and Edward can go in the world to be safe.
Oddly enough it feels like that right now for real in the US and the world in general. Terrorists nowadays might not be after the Lawrence maps. But they seem to be after YOU and everybody else just to make a political point or whatever. Starting two years ago they focused on scaring everybody in Europe. It all seemed to have to do with the migrant crisis. More refugees were on the move than at any time since World War 2. But because Europe, particularly Germany, opened its doors to them Europe now seems to be vulnerable to terrorists in a big way. The Mediterranean in particular seems to be a hotbed of unrest. If you can say that the migrant crisis helped to lead to Brexit, then it helps to explain by there was just recently a confrontation at Gibraltar between England and Spain, the entrance to the Mediterranean. Apparently migrants have used the Mediterranean to cross in boats. The French Riviera town of Nice was shot up in a big way. And now we have Trump launching missiles from a ship in the Mediterranean, making it a war zone, not just a zone of terrorism.
Even if Trump’s missile strike helps to deter the use of chemical and biological weapons by big states, it does not do much to deter terrorism. In the days before the strike there was a terrorist attack in London on Westminster Bridge. The day AFTER the missile strike, another terrorist struck in Stockholm of all places. What is a terrorist doing in Stockholm in Scandanavia? You would think it would be the last place they would go. Are they going to appear in Oslo or Copenhagen next? Is there no place safe? The top of Mt. Everest? The North Pole?
Hopefully the terrorist situation will be resolved somehow during the next few years. I view it as the last stage of the Great War which has turned out to be a 100 years war indeed. All the liberation movements and revolutions that it unleashed have to become history someday. That some day should be soon. But somebody like Trump will have to take the lead. His opening volley is good. He made a big splash with his missile strike. But the big question is what will he do next?

Dora Benley, the World Traveler:
Dora Benley had no idea when she set out on our journey with her parents on May 1, 1915 to England that she was embarking on a lifetime of travel. The young woman at that time was a college student at Bryn Mawr College for young women and had never been abroad before. She had probably not been much of anywhere except Pennsylvania, driving between her native haunts of Pittsburgh where she grew up to Philadelphia where she was attending school and where her parents had another estate in the King of Prussia area called Maymont.
Dora Benley experienced a rough and sudden indoctrination into the world of travel. She embarked on the Lusitania in Manhattan on May 1, 1915. A German torpedo sank it on May 7, 1915 off the coast of Ireland. Dora swore to get revenge on the Germans who sank her ship and killed some of her friends. She joined forces with Edward Ware and later married him, becoming Lady Ware. In the cause of fighting Germans and keeping the Lawrence maps, key to world domination, away from them she traveled to England, Germany, Italy, France, Gibraltar, Chicago, Yellowstone, the Petrified Forest, Santa Fe, San Diego, the Atlantic Provinces of Canada, Scotland, Denmark, and more places than you can count. She kept a wardrobe and suitcase packed at the Savoy Hotel in London just because she never knew where she and her husband, the Colonel, were going to be sent next as spies in the service of Winston Churchill.
The best way to appreciate Dora Benley and her travel itinerary is to read the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series starting with Key to Lawrence Special Edition and continuing with 1935 Plot, Dark Horse, and other novels yet to be published.

Will Cheops Books LLC find itself in Yellowstone this summer standing in front of Old Faithful Geyser? Certainly that is what happens to Dora and Edward in the upcoming historical thriller Old Faithful Plot set in the ominous year 1933 when Hitler first came to power. They are looking for a place to get rid of the Lawrence maps and hand them over to Churchill’s agent sent from Great Britain.
What a choice of locale! Hitler thinks so, too. The Dictator thinks he has discovered time tunnel under the geyser basin that will lead him back to ancient Rome. He wants to eliminate a certain philosopher/historian by the name of Pliny the Elder who first defamed his German ancestors. He thinks that will change history and Germany will win the First World War, putting the Dictator in an even stronger position in Europe of the 30’s.
In addition he wants to threaten the USA. If Dora and Edward do not hand over the maps, key to world domination, he will blow up the geyser basin and Old Faithful Geyser and set off a chain volcanic reaction in the only supervolcano in North America. It will blow the whole country sky high!
