What Does Little Katie Look Like?

When you are reading Dark 3: Special Edition you might wonder what one of the main characters looks like. Little Katie is the four-year-old heiress, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shipley of St. Simons Island, who is always being kidnapped and held for ransom. It happens in Dark 1, Dark 2, and also in the current book about to be published by Dora Benley on September 15, Dark 3: Special Edition. How do you visualize the little girl? We have a drawing done by the original publishers of Dark 2, Scholastic UK, that might give you an idea. She is holding her toy bears and has her finger in her mouth. The world is very puzzling from her perspective.
Likewise with Lord Leopold Ware, another main character in the Dark 3 young adult thriller, we have but a sketch. But it is merely a sketch of Leopold as a young man. The Leopold of Dark 3 is already 97 years old. He has been through a lot since his earlier days, mainly one intrigue after another. Now he is embroiled in a plot with a bunch of Neo Nazis. He is trying to prevent them from kidnapping Little Katie. To do so he has traveled all the way to Disney Land where the novel opens on Little Katie’s fourth birthday.

How would you alter this sketch of Leopold Ware to reflect what he must look like now? If you have suggestions for the authors and the publisher please drop a note in the Contact Box on the Cheops Books LLC website, http://www.edwardwarethrillers.org. If we like it enough, we may publish it with the book on September 15.

Introducing An Illustrated Edition of Dark 3: Special Edition:

The photos included in the Dark 3: Special Edition Photo Gallery on the Edward Ware Thrillers website were taken on an expedition to the Redwood Coast and Brookings, Oregon and a separate expedition to the Hoh Rain Forest and the beach at the Kalaloch Lodge in the Olympic Park. More photos were also snapped on a third expedition all the way to Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Waterloo where the climax of the book occurs. They help to illustrate the various settings of the young adult thriller novel that is the conclusion not only of the Dark Series but also of the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series. Hold onto your seats for the ending. It will make you sit up and take notice. Return to the Dark 3: Special Edition Photo Gallery from time to time. We are always adding new photos.

And by the way, the published Kindle edition of this book, Dark 3: Special Edition, along with the paperback edition will also include illustrations for the first time ever. What does Doc look like? Bianca? Mrs. Baker or Lord Leopold Ware? How about the Shipleys from St. Simons Island? Bianca’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Winters? How about the heiress, Little Katie herself? We hope to include black and white sketches of these people. Let us know what you think. How do they look? We would like your input especially if you are a fan of the Dark series.

Background for Dark 3: Special Edition:

We took a generous amount of time to complete the trip, 52 days to be exact, driving no more than about 100 miles per day or less and stopping at a lot of places. We exited Arizona on I-8 stopping at Gila Bend and Yuma. We drove over the mountain to California and it got instantly much cooler. It was 100 in Arizona and only 63 in San Diego where we stayed overnight at El Cajon. We proceeded to Encinitas with its nearby Moonlight State Beach. Then we spent 2 days in San Juan Capistrano where we visited the Mission. Then we stayed for a couple of days at the Loews Hotel in Santa Monica with Muscle Beach in front of the hotel.

Then we left the coast behind for awhile (I’m not the type to drive the Big Sur), and drove over the mountain between Los Angeles and Bakersfield. We also stayed in Fresno before spending a few days in Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We rented a cabin from the Redwoods at Yosemite and stayed in the Wawona section of the park near the Wawona Hotel. The Mariposa Grove of Big Trees wasn’t far away. Huge sugar pines grew near the cottage. I have a souvenir pine cone that must be two feet long! I could send you a picture of that. Then we got back to the Valley of California and drove north to Stockton. Only then did we head back towards the Pacific Coast through the Wine Country, driving through Napa and Sonoma until we reached Santa Rosa north of San Francisco. After that we stayed in a town called Ukiah before moving on to Garberville on the edge of the Redwood Country. From here we drove down the Avenue of the Giants. We drove through increasingly deserted country with beaches in view where we stopped from time to time to take photos. After Eureka we reached Arcata where we stayed for the night after stocking up on redwood souvenirs along the highway. Right now sitting at my dining room table I see evidence of that drive. I am looking straight at redwood napkin holders. We stopped at the Redwood National Park Visitors’ Center in Crescent City and proceeded to our destination at Brookings, Oregon. In this remote location we enjoyed a stay at the Best Western Beachfront Inn right on the beach. We took photos of huge logs and trees washed up on the beach. The headlands and sea stacks were scenic, too.

This trip proved to be the background for much of the setting of Dark 3: Special Edition where I feature a chase scene along the West Coast.

Book of the Dead by Dora Benley:
Starting tomorrow on Sunday, May 14 through May 18 you can download Dora Benley’s exciting new thriller novel, Book of the Dead, for free on Amazon Kindle. But hurry! An offer this good won’t wait. It won’t be repeated this year.
As soon as the King family settles in their new house in Cairo things begin to change rapidly. On Leona’s birthday her stepdaughter gives her an ancient scroll full of hieroglyphics. Her husband tells Leona it is a Book of the Dead, an ancient Egyptian text full of spells and magic chants to help the newly dead person gain admission into the afterlife, the Land of the Setting Sun. The scroll is to help him avoid getting eaten by the Devourer after his heart is weighed on the scales of truth against a feather and found wanting. Leona has no idea where Margaret got such a scroll. She remembers seeing her in the souk, taking something from a woman covered with dark veils from head to foot with only a claw-like hand protruding.
From that moment on Leona’s once perfect world closes in on her. She finds herself kidnapped, locked in a tomb, nearly driven mad, and tormented by an Egyptian spirit who has somehow been loosed on her. She must fight for her very life in this supernatural novel about Egyptian archaeology in the 1920’s.
If you enjoyed Book of the Dead by Dora Benley you will enjoy her other historical thrillers including Dark 3, Salisbury Plot, Rose Red, Mary’s Gone, and Latin Lessons.
