Nightmare Over Bats, Bees, And Stairs:

We are not turning life into a nightmare over bats and bees. You are by not taking simple precautions. It is ordinary and typical here to put up screens. It is NOT normal NOT to have screens. Europe is behind the times putting up with pests that have been banished here. Obviously you don’t want bats, bees, hornets, or flies in your house if you can easily prevent it. Besides, you are starting to get mosquitoes back in Britain again. Did you know that? You drained the fens in Elizabethan times, but they are starting to come back. This is especially true in the south of England. You don’t want to get bitten by mosquitoes, do you? Screens also by the way help to keep thieves out, human thieves.

And some of those European stairs, by the way, are dangerous. Rick Steves, the travel guide and travel writers, takes tours to Europe every year. He warns the American tourists to watch out for the stairs which are not at all typical of stairs in the US. Last year a lady on one of his tours was injured by falling down the stairs in Europe.

I should send you photos of stairs in the US. You would immediately perceive the difference. Of course Tucson is such that most houses are ranches on a single level and so are most shopping centers. You rarely use stairs at all here. Besides, a second story would be bad for air-conditioning because warm air rises and cold air falls.

But traveling to Europe was a study in stairs starting with the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. We walked up three flights of 12 stairs each or 36 stairs to access the ship’s boarding ramp. Most people were waiting in line for the escalator so we took the short cut and had the stairs to ourselves. We boarded the ship on deck 3. Our cabin was on deck 4. We had to go to deck 7 almost right away for lunch. Then later in the afternoon we had to return to deck 7 for lifeboat drill. Dinner was back on deck 3, and so it went for the rest of the voyage to Europe.

But as soon as we got to Germany the “stair trial” began at once. The first hotel we looked at we rejected solely on the basis of the stairs. They looked horrendous. We instead checked into the Best Western in Oldenburg which had stairs that were OK. In fact, we were to return to this hotel again on the return trip to the cruise terminal in Hamburg. The best turned out to be the Hotel du Lac in Genval which had rooms believe it or not on the ground level. That was certainly much safer.

Salisbury Photo Album:

Cheops Books LLC is going to publish the historical thriller and second volume in the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series, Salisbury Affair, on May 4. In honor of the town of Salisbury, England where Dora and Edward are married on September 30, 1934, Cheops Books LLC is going to set up a section of the website to feature the town of Salisbury, Salisbury Cathedral, and nearby Stonehenge that we visited in 2012. We will use photos that we took ourselves.

Who would ever have thought that such a peaceful, quiet corner of England could turn into a world crisis center? In fact, part of the tension of the novel Salisbury Affair is created by the contrast between the pastoral setting and Helga and her manipulations in 1934. Helga besieges Dora’s and Edward’s wedding at the cathedral by disguising herself and throwing things down from the balcony. Then, right after the wedding, she almost murders Dora on her wedding day at the cathedral. Who would think that in 2018 Russia would do even better than Helga in defacing the place with its chemical weapons? But such are world events and history itself.

What To Do About The Bad Russians?

Amazing show of solidarity organized by May and the British — throwing out all those Russian diplomats and Russians who are also spies all over the world in lots of different countries. It looks good on the news. But I wish they could do something of more lasting substance. Owning 20% of a Russian state monopoly can’t do much besides help support the bad guy Russian government. Gazprom and Gazpromneft are gas and oil companies that produce the money for the state to operate on. They would never let Britain decide anything. Maybe Europe should close down all gas stations operated by Russians.

Cheops Books LLC concerns itself with troublesome Russians in the upcoming thriller Unlocking Trinity, an Edward Ware Thrillers at War novel.

The Ware’s little girl has been kidnapped by Hitler and forced to live with him at the Berghof. But when Hitler commits suicide in his Berlin Bunker on April 30, 1945, what happens to the child who has been indoctrinated as a Nazi, who has forgotten that English is her native language?

Her biological father, General Lord Edward Ware, must defy Eisenhower’s order to leave Berlin to the Russians. He must get to her before Stalin’s henchwoman does. It becomes a race to Trinity in the wilds of New Mexico in the birth trauma of the Cold War.

A Peter The Great Move Needed:

Yes, supposedly Trump is now expelling Russian diplomats from the US. Although it is “showy” and captures news headlines, how is it going to harm Moscow or change Moscow? Even if they broke off diplomatic relations, what is it going to accomplish? Maybe it is like snubbing Moscow, but Moscow is accustomed to being snubbed. They have closed down the consulate in Seattle. The Russians are closing consulates. This is not going to change anything.

We need a Peter the Great move. He went to Amsterdam and studied the Dutch. He learned to build canals in St. Petersburg. The Americans, British, French, Germans, etc should declare they are going to build more canal boats in St. Petersburg — anything like this would cause more change than all the diplomats could you possibly shift around. In an ideal world Trump should declare that he is going to build an air base in Siberia or even build roads in Russia. And if Putin were going to become like Peter the Great he would connect himself with such a move.

The Edward Ware Thrillers at War novel about Russia is Unlocking Trinity.

If I Were May Or Trump:

If I were May I would not stop making a point to the Russians until the point is actually made. You cannot have Russia attacking England with chemical weapons and endangering innocent civilians in peace time. If you accept that sort of thing and don’t make a point of it, who knows what the Russians will try next.

If I were in charge of the US which I am not, I would announce that the Russians were teaming up with the US to fight dissident elements in other countries around Russia. For instance there are lots of “stans”. I would say we had decided to build an American air force base in Siberia and thus a British air force base, too. I wonder what the Russians would really do. Would Putin try to stop us? Would he attack? Actually I doubt it. I think he would pretend to go along with it because he had no choice.

Also in Russia this would make him immensely popular. There is nothing the common everyday Russians would like better than Americans and British people bringing money and jobs. America in particular is NOT on Russia’s traditional enemy list. If Putin carried it off, he might become as famous as Peter the Great in Russian history who was the most western leaning czar. But sadly the US isn’t that interested in Russia to help prop it up like this.

Cheops Books LLC will soon publish Unlocking Trinity, the Edward Ware Thrillers novel about Russia.

Salisbury Incident:

The American fake news is not at fault here. This Salisbury incident has gotten sparse coverage here just because America is so isolationist and it didn’t happen here. Cheops Books LLC is interested only because we visited Salisbury in 2012 and made it a place of significance in the Edward Ware Thriller Series.

Cheops Books LLC has read that Salisbury is NOT carrying on as normal. It’s tourist trade has taken a big hit. Even people from Great Britain won’t go there let alone tourists from America. This is part of what I am talking about.

Also as to how it spreads, how would you know who was there at the time or who comes from Salisbury if you are a stranger in a strange land? If you are paranoid enough, you would tend to avoid everybody because you don’t know who is who. Also you wonder if these secret Russian agents are still at large. What is their next plan? Are they going after someone else in Great Britain? Who? When? Where? You think you might be unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Russians may be claiming they were framed, but that is impossible. Terrorists wouldn’t have access to such materials. The guy was a Russian spy. How many others would know that except the Russians? Cheops Books LLC will agree that it may not have been Putin, but it has to be somebody he knows.

Cheops Books LLC will publish Salisbury Affair by Dora Benley on May 4.

Cheops Books LLC Took Shore Excursion To Salisbury:

When Cheops Books LLC took the shore excursion in July of 2012 to Salisbury Cathedral and Stonehenge, the tour guide told us when we were coming into town in Salisbury about his memories of World War 2 as a little boy. He remembered being given candy by American and Canadian GI’s waiting to be shipped out for operations such as D-Day. He showed us where all the units were housed along the roads as we got closer and closer to Salisbury.

The tour guide did not mention chemical weapons factories outside of Salisbury, but what we suspect is that they must be north of town since south of town is the New Forest which we drove through and which is a national park. But we are sure they are there as you say.

The area around Salisbury has been from time immemorial a place to see the coming and going of armies in Britain from the time of the Romans and Julius Caesar to the time of William the Conqueror and onward to the present time. In fact the whole south coast of England along the Channel from Southampton to Dover is important from the strategic point of view. Dover Castle was actually used during WW2. The evacuation from Dunkirk was directed from the castle.

That is one of the reasons Cheops Books LLC chose Salisbury as the town nearest Ware Hall, home of Colonel Sir Edward Ware, hero of the Edward Ware Thrillers At War Series. It is a military setting. He is in the military. All of his ancestors back to Roman times have been in the military, too.

Still that is no justification for the Russians to use chemical weapons there especially against civilians. Cheops Books LLC remembers that the town also had a medieval atmosphere. Salisbury Cathedral itself had such a medieval feel about it that it might as well have had knights in shining armor at the doors. It certainly had a lot of stained glass windows. All around town are bronze age burial mounds. What is now to happen to all of this?

How To End Putin’s Dictatorship:

Frankly I think that is shocking. I would not call Putin and congratulate him on anything right about now. You cannot allow the use of chemical weapons in modern day societies especially in time of peace. That is an absolute all by itself. It has to be dealt with, not ignored. It is the most paranoid piece of news I have heard in a long, long time. In a way it is more fearful than 9/11. It is worse than terrorism. The contamination is invisible and you cannot know how to protect yourself. It can work when bombs are not there at all, killing people silently and even months or years later like nuclear radiation.

There are two ways to end the Putin dictatorship — the fast way and the slow way. You are talking about the slow way, the development of the middle class. The fast way would be to topple the dictator. Of course I don’t see the US taking that on either. They always have to take half measures.

Gary thinks it sounds like a novel, but wouldn’t it be weird if a game or a trick was going on. The British kick out the Russians. They break off diplomatic relations. May cancels Trump’s trip to Britain. At the same time Trump invites Putin to Washington. If I were the Russians I would be suspicious of a trick.

Americans Can Go After The Russians:

Here it doesn’t take Trump or the Congress doing as much. Individuals and individual businesses can go after the Russians. All you have to do is bring a court case against the Russians or a particular Russian. If the Salisbury incident had occurred in the US — God forbid! and I can’t imagine it! — then locals who lived in the town could sue the Russians or the Russian government. The court could attach Russian property in the US to pay for the damages. This is what has discouraged Russians from buying as much property here to begin with.

Cheops Books LLC will publish Unlocking Trinity, the Edward Ware Thrillers at War novel about Stalin and Russia during World War 2.

Crackdown On The Russians:

I am forwarding an article from National Review that Gary read to me last night about the Russians. This says that Cameron when he was PM was trying to get rid of anonymous real estate investments by Russians in London. Then he resigned. The article claims that May has not continued in this direction. The article insists this is why you have so many vacant houses in London — the Russians own them. And these Russians are the Russian elite who have profited under Putin, Putin’s “team” if you will.

The article also says that the former KGB, the Russian intelligence forces, are stronger and bigger than in Soviet times and have become semi-independent of Putin. They act on their own. The article implies that there might be a “rising star” in the intelligence service who might succeed Putin someday or even overthrow him. And the intelligence service was what carried out the Salisbury attack which I deeply resent since we visited Salisbury in 2012.

This joint exercise at the North Pole is exactly what I mean. Do exercises anywhere. As long as you have a show of force the Russians will get it. The Russian navy in particular is no good.

Russia is a main subject in the upcoming Edward Ware Thrillers at War novel Unlocking Trinity.
