I took an all day tour to the Sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi. The bus drove past the birthplace of Hercules at Thebes north into increasingly mountainous terrain. The snow-capped peak of Mount Parnassus was gilt with sunlight. The bus wound around the mountain up narrow dirt roads. The Valley of Apollo where his olive groves grew was sparkling with a mist of sunshine. I climbed past all the treasuries and past the Oracle to the amphitheater. I did not reach the stadium because I needed time to buy postcards. This is the sort of place that inspires you with thoughts of returning there someday. The giant postcard or print still hangs on my wall to remember that day.
