German Nationalists from the nineteenth century on have been interested in Hermann the German. Who was he? By legend he was the German tribal warrior who led his troops to massacre Augustus’s legions in 9 AD and prevent them from advancing any further into Germany itself. Hermann stopped the Romans from reaching the Elbe River near Hamburg and kept them near the Rhine River instead. Bismarck and Hitler himself hailed the man. A statue was built to him which we picture here.
But what is the truth? I think that in 9AD there was a plot originating in Rome itself to overthrow Augustus. Some dark figure hired Hermann and corrupted him into killing off the legions. Exactly how the plot developed will be a subject of a future Edward Ware Thrillers At War novel. Who knows? Maybe even one of Colonel Sir Edward Ware’s ancestors fought in the battle on the Roman side but survived, of course, so that someday General Ware could fight Hitler.
