Vincentia has just arrived back from her summer program in Latin at Bryn Mawr College. She has just stepped off the Amtrak train in downtown Tucson. But Lyle Sterns is not there to pick her up and take her back her her house. The train leaves the station. It gets dark. She is the only person left standing there.

Suddenly a car pulls up. She leaps in and they start off. She chatters to Lyle, but he doesn’t respond. She stares at the young man who is driving. He looks like Lyle, but he can’t be. He is headed the wrong way. She doesn’t know where they are going. All she knows is that she is not going home tonight.
