Dark 1 opens on St. Simons Island, Georgia, the home of the heroine, Bianca Winters, and her employers, the Shipleys, the parents of Little Katie Shipley, the heiress. This swampy barrier island with live oaks with moss is the atmospheric setting for the mysterious murder of Mrs. Ingersoll, the upstairs maid, one night while Bianca is babysitting the newborn baby. But the novel doesn’t stop there. Dark 2 takes the characters to London on a worldwide chase after the killer. And Dark 3 begins in Anaheim, California in Disneyland where Little Katie is celebrating her birthday after fleeing with her parents from St. Simons Island where she had been kidnapped all too many times. In their quest to evade the killer Bianca and Little Katie must travel up the west coast to Vancouver and fly to Germany where the young adult thriller’s climactic scene occurs.
