Emily waits at her locker every day just to say hello to Scott Bradley, the high school dream to die for. One morning after she puts on her makeup in front of the mirror attached to the inside of her locker, she turns around and smiles radiantly only to see Ted. Ted is her next door neighbor that she has known ever since kindergarten. He is a total nothing. He is in her way. She tries to push past him. He pursues her and tries to get her to listen to something he says is important, but he doesn’t know what important is. She gets detention because of him and escapes only after school. She seeks out her special place in the park where she can lie there in the shade and gaze up into the trees.

Did she go to sleep or what? She looks up suddenly to see a lithe girl doing all sorts of gyrations in the trees that seem pretty impossible. The mystery girl defies the laws of gravity leaping down to the ground and back up into the trees. Has Emily’s mind been turned to mush? Is this what Ted does to her? Or is it something else? Emily had better figure it out before her whole brain gets put in the shade.
