We had made a reservation at the Ibis Trier and were pleased with the stylish exterior appearance of the hotel in the downtown area when we first pulled up to the building. But when we tried to check in our opinions changed drastically. There was loud construction going on in the lobby. In addition they were going to assign us to a room on the second floor where we would in effect be locked upstairs. Yes, that’s right, locked upstairs. We would have to call the front desk for permission to come downstairs. They would unlock the doors and let us go. What if there was a fire? I’ve never heard of an arrangement like this in a first world country. We canceled our reservation and fled. We would have to find another place to stay for the night.
