Driving west towards Pittsburgh with the Allegheny Mountains surrounding us today, we went through the Allegheny Tunnel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. It’s an old tunnel. It’s narrow and dark. One wonders when it’s ever going to end. Ghouls seemed to pop up in the garish light. Trucks and cars were crowded together as if it were the Underworld. It can’t be very safe, can it? Maybe Dora Benley might have driven though it in 1940 when it first opened to the public. She might have been proud of it as a wonder of engineering since she was the daugher of a Pittsburgh Robber Baron. That was 80 years ago! Traffic and safety standards have changed. We aren’t wedded to the German idea of long tunnels anymore. Bring the highway up to date and keep me away from the ghouls. I might just able able to sniff the flowers and notice the leaves.
