Curious that democracy was suspended during WW2 in Britain. That reminds me of the ancient Roman dictatorship during the Republic. Dictatorship didn’t mean the same thing in Roman days. A consul would assume the dictatorship when Rome was at war. Then he would be in absolute control until the war was over. Only then did the Dictator lay down his powers. The last consul to successfully act this way was Sulla about 80 BC. Julius Caesar, of course, didn’t do this. He crossed the Rubicon instead and brought his army into Rome.
