If you look over your shoulder, you think you’d see William the Conqueror himself. What I found particularly spooky was the Cloisters at Salisbury Cathedral. There may be a greensward but apparently there are bodies buried there, too. And when touring the Cathedral itself, we ran into all sorts of painted wooden tomb chests (I think that’s what they’re called). I’m not accustomed to that sort of thing in America. For instance this summer we went to Santa Fe, New Mexico which is the oldest city in western North America. We toured the St Francis Cathedral which was built in 1886. There was nothing at all spooky there.
