When we were up at the Obersalzberg visiting the area where the Berghof used to stand we found a curious archaeological survival of what we think must have been National Socialist times. It was right outside what used to be the General Walker Hotel and before that the Platterhof Hotel. Apparently Bormann constructed all sorts of underground bunkers in the area. Some of them extended right up to the hotel. In a green embankment a stone’s throw away from the patio area where they have tables with umbrellas and all sorts of souvenirs for sale, there stood the remains of an old stone wall with a locked doorway hidden on the side of a hill and almost completely concealed with grass. Carved into the stone right above the doorway were the letters: HH. Our son actually saw it before we did and pointed it out. I leave it to your imagination what the HH could stand for. Could it be “Heil Hitler?”
