What is the better way to get to England and Germany — Fly there by jet aircraft or take a transatlantic cruise on the Queen Mary 2? Jets have obvious disadvantages: long lines, jet lag, flying at night, airport security, and possible terrorist attacks. Also for me I’ve always been terrified of flying.

But then the ship has drawbacks, too. It might be leisurely. It might avoid jet lag. But who wants to be out in the middle of the North Atlantic for days without seeing another ship or land itself? I’d feel like Christopher Columbus! And then there’s sea-sickness. Who wants to get that? In addition, ships seem to be breeding places for the flu. And if anyone is afraid of heights, ships seem to be a vertical world. In addition, I’m not exactly the type who likes to dress for dinner. High heel shoes and I don’t get along at all.

I wish there was a road from New York to London. I would already have driven it.
