Most Outstanding Book On The Original Queen Mary: RMS Queen Mary The World’s Favorite Liner
The first time I ever encountered this book was on the Queen Mary 2 last summer on the way from Southampton to New York. It was in the library on deck 8. It was a good thing I took extensive photos of the pictures and even took movies of the text and pictures of the rooms on the original Queen Mary that now resides in Long Beach, California. When I came ashore I found that I couldn’t get it through interlibrary loan. And online I would have to pay over $100.00 to buy it. It was clearly out of print. Yet it’s the most detailed book ever written on what was inside that famous ocean liner of yesteryear. It gave me a vivid image of the Verandah Grill, one of the world’s most famous and elegant restaurants at the time that was a trend-setter even among restaurants on land. It pioneered mood lighting that changed depending on what music was playing. I thought the children’s playroom aft on the Verandah deck was very imaginative. There was a sun on the ceiling, a sliding board with animals carved into it, and caves underneath the slide.
P.S. Believe me, the Queen Mary 2 doesn’t have anything like these rooms nowadays!
