Frommer’s London 2013: 454 Pages But Not Enough Info
I was using this guide to plan a future trip to England, and I’ll let you know what I thought. The section on side trips from London isn’t nearly extensive enough. In fact it mentions only Windsor, Brighton, Cambridge, Oxford, Bath, and Salisbury/Stonehenge. I’ve already seen Salisbury/Stonehenge and recently at that. It leaves out the one I’m most interested in: an excursion to Churchill’s country estate in Kent, Chartwell. The two attractions I want to see most in London are the Imperial War Museum and the Churchill War Rooms. Both are mentioned but only briefly. The guide doesn’t tell me enough, but at least it includes phone numbers and websites. In the restaurant section the Savoy Grill is reviewed, but the guide fails to mention the link between the Savoy Grill and Winston Churchill in the 1930’s. This was his favorite restaurant, and he used it to meet with friends and informants. The Savoy Hotel Section under places to stay actually mentions the association with the war-time cabinet. But it doesn’t discuss the historic rooms.
