Into The Land Of Southern Magnolias:

As we checked out of the La Quinta in Sulphur Springs and drove east on I-30, the trees grew taller. The grass was everywhere along with the sounds of mowers. We crossed the Sulphur River. Swamps appeared, too. The sun came out. Humidity embraced us, making it feel very warm indeed. Edward was accustomed to the sun beating down on him in the Syrian Desert. But in the shade of a rocky plinth it felt cool and even chilly. That is the way of deserts. This seems almost semi-tropical. Everyone suddenly started to open doors for us and say, “Yes, m’am.” In our journey across the country, we’ve definitely wandered into the Deep South.
