What’s much more tricky than zippers is the history of communications. Phone calls really drive me crazy. I don’t think it occurs in Key to Lawrence. Mr. Benley calls the British Embassy in Washington DC, but there’s never an occasion when anybody wants to call somebody overseas. But in Map Plot, Edward’s version of WW1, the novel quickly became dependent on international communications. When I found out
