As part of my research for Key to Lawrence (also the scene you haven’t yet read in Captive at the Berghof about the HMS Queen Mary) we sailed on the Queen Mary 2 back and forth to Hamburg stopping in Southampton. Boy was that an experience! Fog at sea. Fog horns blowing at midnight. North Atlantic winds rattling your windows! Vibrations from the engine when you try to sleep. I tried to put something of this flavor in Key to Lawrence. Captain Christopher Welles was very British and gave the Captain’s report every day at lunch time.
