Caesar’s Lost Legions First Of Several Roman Novels:
Caesar’s Lost Legions is the first of several new Roman historical thrillers by Dora Benley. There will also be Pliny: A Thriller, and Carthage Must Be Destroyed.
Caesar Augustus has sent Caelius Antonius to the Roman province of Germania in 9 AD to draw a map of wonders that will lead the legions to a promised land as far East as the River Elbe. There are reports of a a sea port that would serve as a highway to lands as yet unnamed.
Augustus ward, Arminius, a model German turned Roman, has volunteered to lead the legions of Varus there. Caelius awakens one night to find a symbol of Thor’s hammer engraved in the tree bark outside his tent. He senses a spy from some disaffected tribe watching him. He reports the spy to Varus who defers to Arminius. Arminius says that all the Germans are of course watching, delighted that the Romans have come to civilize their benighted country.
Evidence builds of a conspiracy. Caelius reports it to Augustus back in Rome personally. But Augustus refuses to listen. Arminius was his ward who had lived in his house in Rome, and Caesar had never had a son of his own. Arminius was his blind spot. As a warning to Caelius, Caelius’s wife is kidnapped. No matter what Caelius must defend his maps to the death. They hold the key to Rome’s future. He hopes that neither he nor his wife must die to realize it.
Join Edward’s long ago ancestor, Caelius, in his adventures on the far frontiers of the Roman Empire in Germany. They echo the adventures his latter day descendant, Edward Ware, will someday face in his own map plots against the latter-day Germans.

Old Faithful Plot Book Trailer Links To Pompeii:
The eruption of Vesuvius on August 24, 79AD was one of the most famous natural disasters of all time. It buried ancient Pompeii and Herculaneum under clouds of ash and mud flows from the still active volcano in southern Italy south of Rome along the Bay of Naples. It was so famous that even Adolf Hitler got the idea that he wanted to create a modern day Pompeii in America of all places. He picked not only a volcano but a super volcano with the power to destroy not only a town but half a continent. He wanted to get America out of his way permanently so that they could not interfere in any future war. Read about how he did this in the upcoming Edward Ware Thrillers at War novel Old Faithful Plot. Pictures of the Pompeii eruption will be featured in the book trailer soon to be posted on the website: http://www.edwardwarethrillers.org.

Two Mediterranean Cruises That Dora And Edward Would Like:
Dora and Edward would want to visit Rome and Venice for certain and Gibraltar thrown in would not be a bad addition. So we would recommend that they sign up for the Cunard Queen Elizabeth 2 50th anniversary cruise Q729 offered by Cunard Lines this autumn starting on September 8. Not only does the Mediterranean cruise stop in Venice which is a must see for the couple who spent so many fretful hours there fighting Hitler, it also stops in Gibraltar as a last stop before reaching Southampton and England once again. Edward and Dora would enjoy taking a motor launch across the Venetian lagoon. They might even revisit the beach at the Lido where they spent some nervous hours at the famous hotel trying to figure out how to escape the island. Dora eventually hired a private yacht to take her, her husband, and her daughter to Paris to meet Winston Churchill at the Ritz Hotel.
Another possible Mediterranean cruise for the well-heeled, well-traveled couple might be a second Cunard offering for late this summer. This cruise is also aboard the Queen Elizabeth, the newest offering of the Cunard Line which ought to be overly familiar to Dora and bring back memories of her time on the Lusitania in 1915. This cruise is aptly named Mediterranean Highlights. This cruise stops in Citavecchia, the new port for Rome now that Ostia has silted up. They can take a tour and explore the haunts of Edward’s long-ago ancestors in the time of the late Republic and early Empire. They might even visit the Forum on a bus tour or on a romantic horse and buggy ride or perhaps via the Roma Train from the cruise port. They could gawk at the House of Augustus on Palatine Hill where Edward’s ancestor once dined with the first Emperor of Rome while discussing the rebellious Germans who were to do in Augustus’s legions in 9AD.
At another port of call in Naples they can visit the Vesuvius volcano that lends its name to one of the historical thrillers in the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series, the Vesuvius Plot. They can go ashore and visit Herculaneum and/or Pompeii, very nearby Pliny the Elder’s villa. Why Pliny the Elder? Find out how the great Roman writer is tied into the series by reading the upcoming Old Faithful Plot and the Vesuvius Plot soon.

Prediction For The Future: History Repeats Itself:
My Prediction for the future: The EU was the immediate result of the fallout from World War 1 and World War 2, the main political and military events of the twentieth century. The European countries had had enough by the 1950’s and wanted time to get their economies going again. But as the years went by, the various European countries became more prosperous. The people in Europe start to forget the immediate past and the lessons of the world wars. Nationalism starts to raise its ugly head again, at least ugly if you don’t like this sort of thing and remember what it led to in the past.
Nationalism in its modern sense had its origins in Europe. I think it was the Sun King, Louis XIV, who first brought France together as a nation state. England under the Tudors wasn’t far behind. For instance, Henry VIII breaking with the Church in Rome was exercising his nationalist muscles. Even countries like Germany and Italy fell in line during the 19th century with unification movements.
Two years ago I would have said the EU would last forever. My prediction has since changed with all this Middle Eastern terrorism in Europe and the Syrian refugees pouring in. I think this is helping to ignite nationalist movements all over Europe. Heck, Martin Luther was able to get the German states to function together to eject the Turk, Suleiman, who came knocking on the gates of Vienna. And to do this he had to interrupt principalities at war with each other in the build up to the Thirty Years War. Yes, Europe is remembering its old identities again.
Britain, the most prosperous European country after WW2, has found its old identity first. It wants to eject immigrants and build walls, I guess. Soon other states may follow in the general breakup of the EU. Either that or the solid core of the EU that might remain will be all Germanic. Germany, Austria, Belgium, Holland, and the Scandinavian countries are all Germanic in origin. On Roman maps you find reference to a tribe in Greater Gaul called the Belgii, for instance. Parts of France were Gauls. The line at the Rhine River was imposed by the Varusschlacht in 9AD, but still these were all the same sort of tribes. In the future if this part of the EU survives it may be only to assert a new kind of German nationalism. You might find that this sounds like a nightmare for the future. But the more things change, the more they remain the same.
The Varusschlacht is the subject of an upcoming Edward Ware Thrillers at War novel entitled the Cherusci Plot.

In Pursuit of Pliny the Elder: The Port Of Ostia
The modern port city of Citavecchia is far different from the ancient Roman port of Ostia, which is much closer to the city of Rome. On his trips around the Roman World by sea Pliny the Elder would have come to Ostia often. Ostia is an often neglected site among tourists but apparently you can get as good an idea about life in ancient Rome at Ostia as you can in either Rome or the more famous ancient city of Pompeii. Why? No one else goes there! And crowds are prohibitive. It might be easier to imagine the author of the Natural History sailing off here than in more southern ports. He probably left from here to sail off to his governorship in Trier, the administrative center for the province of Germania, or Germany. So you can look for a special scene where Pliny the Elder and his entourage disembark in Ostia to keep their dinner date with the Emperor Tiberius before heading off to his villa along the coast near Herculaneum and Pompeii, which gives it name to the Cheops Books, LLC historical thriller, the Vesuvius Plot.

Will You See Cheops Books In Tarragona This Summer?
See you in Tarragona is hardly what you hear most people saying about their plans for this summer especially if you hail from the USA. But if you happen to be hanging around Barcelona come summer and you are bored with the beach and looking for thrills and chills you might just see a van driving past with staff from Cheops Books headed toward the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tarragona and its fantastic Roman ruins. Here you don’t just have a building or two, you have a whole ruined city to behold. You can stand in the well-preserved amphitheater and gaze out to sea at the same time just as Romans did thousands of years ago from about 218BC onward through the Middle Ages.
A teenager back in the USA could be looking through the attic in her house and come upon a vase or piece of jewellery from this era and this town of Tarragona, Spain. She could start hearing voices and start seeing ghosts who talk about some cataclysmic event that occurred here a long time ago that haunts them and the heroine still. And this could become a young adult thriller for Edward Ware Thrillers YA.
Pliny the Elder could visit Tarragona on his madcap escape from the Germanic tribes who have his number because of his book, the Germania, criticizing their peoples and their cultural traditions. He could hide among the Spanish peoples forever. It could become a legend and legend only that he disappeared in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD in Vesuvius Plot, coming soon from Cheops Books, LLC, another book in the Edward Ware Thrillers at War Series.
So don’t forget to enter the On The Road Again Contest sponsored by Cheops Books before May 1. Win the Amazon gift certificate and see you on the road.

Will Cheops Books LLC find itself in Yellowstone this summer standing in front of Old Faithful Geyser? Certainly that is what happens to Dora and Edward in the upcoming historical thriller Old Faithful Plot set in the ominous year 1933 when Hitler first came to power. They are looking for a place to get rid of the Lawrence maps and hand them over to Churchill’s agent sent from Great Britain.
What a choice of locale! Hitler thinks so, too. The Dictator thinks he has discovered time tunnel under the geyser basin that will lead him back to ancient Rome. He wants to eliminate a certain philosopher/historian by the name of Pliny the Elder who first defamed his German ancestors. He thinks that will change history and Germany will win the First World War, putting the Dictator in an even stronger position in Europe of the 30’s.
In addition he wants to threaten the USA. If Dora and Edward do not hand over the maps, key to world domination, he will blow up the geyser basin and Old Faithful Geyser and set off a chain volcanic reaction in the only supervolcano in North America. It will blow the whole country sky high!

The fifth chapter of Captive at the Berghof: Part 1 has been posted on the website in the German-language serialization section. We are serializing the novel chapter by chapter as it is translated. When we get to the last chapter, we will publish a special German edition of part 1 on amazon.com and amazon.de. It will be the first thriller that Cheops Books LLC has ever translated into a foreign language.
We thought it was appropriate. After all the Edward Ware Thrillers at War series of historical thrillers concerns itself mostly with World War 1 and World War 2 and with the British and Americans fighting the Germans first under the Kaiser and then under Hitler. It is a particularly “German” topic about the “German question”. Also the author, Linda Cargill, worked for a German publisher, Cora Verlag, for years turning out thrillers. So it seemed like the novel to pick.
Hitler has found out about Colonel Sir Edward Ware’s secret undercover activities for Winston Churchill, and he’s playing hardball. He kidnaps Thomasina, Edward’s daughter, and won’t give the child back unless Edward and his wife, Dora, hand over the key to world domination – the Lawrence maps. They’d better do something fast before Thomasina truly becomes Hitler’s daughter.
In the future Cheops Books LLC plans to translate the Cherusci Plot into German also. That historical thriller about the Roman era takes place in 9 AD when the Cherusci tribe massacred Caesar Augustus’s best three legions and stopped the progress of the Roman Empire at the Rhine River. They could not progress towards the Elbe River and what is now Hamburg. It is a topic of strong German interest that changed the course of Western Civilization for the past two thousand years.
Comments Off on German Translation of Captive at the Berghof Part 1:
John Kerry Never Heard of Titus: John Kerry, in an attempt to rankle the incoming President Elect Donald Trump, issued one of the most uneducated, unconsidered statements that I have ever heard a politician make in this country when he said that Israel can’t be both Jewish and Democratic at the same time. It shows that he has never heard of the Emperor Titus.
I would agree that the Jews probably couldn’t practice their religion and act democratic in the western sense if they had never run into the son of Vespasian, one of the three Flavian Emperors of the first century B.C. But in 70 B.C. Titus, then yet to become Emperor, went into the Jewish city and sacked the Temple in the Siege of Jerusalem. This led to the Diaspora, sending the Jews out into the Empire either as slaves or to fend for themselves. After centuries of this experience the Jews became more westernized and Europeanized than their Arab counterparts. That is why in the twentieth century they were able to recreated the state of Israel after almost 2000 years. They can now practice their religion and act democratic in the western sense because of their centuries long experience. The Arabs never experienced such a Diaspora. They are the ones who cannot deal with the westernization experience and all the modern thoughts and idea such as democracy. They are the terrorists. The Jews are not. John Kerry should realize this.
Titus is a character in the upcoming Cheops Books LLC historical thriller about Roman times called the Vesuvius Plot.
