176 Miles In 6 Hours On The Autobahn — What’s Going On? 10//09/12
AAA says that on American highways it takes 2 hours to go 100 miles. That’s supposed to include meals and stops. But when we drove from Hamburg to Potsdam on Sunday, July 15 this past summer it took 6 hours plus. We found this to be true all over Germany on the autobahns. In some cases it was worse. The amount of traffic on the roads, the number of “stalls”, the crowding at autohofs was incredible. They even slowed you down going to the bathroom at Serways service areas by making you go through a line and pay anywhere between 30 cents and 70 cents to use the toilets. We learned to choose the meals that were the quickest such as the spaghetti instead of the Burger King options where the crowds gathered, or we would have spent even more time on the highways.
No wonder Germans post frowning faces on the highways when you came to road construction. Everybody had to anticipate even more delays!
