Out in the Middle of Nowhere, Germany: Rest Area Near Suhl and Zella-Mehlis 11/18/12
We stopped here this past summer on our 10-day driving trip of Germany on our way from Weimar to Nuremberg. It was the point that seemed the farthest away from cities and civilization, the most like an American national park experience. Ads at the rest area showcased hiking in the mountains. There seemed to be plenty around. Though the rest area itself was rather basic and didn’t offer food or shops, it was near the longest tunnel we ever drove through — straight through one of those imposing Thuringian mountains.
