I eagerly bought this movie because I loved the original Haggard novel, which I consider the best thriller of all times. It’s clear that Hollywood decided to add the Deborah Kerr role to draw a wider female audience. The only love interest in the original involved a member of the expedition and a native Zulu girl, which was doomed according to Victorian mores. Is the movie improved Haggard? Not quite. The new romantic emphasis takes away from the Zulu mystery and the evil magic woman of the original. In the original you weren’t quite sure if the characters would escape from King Solomon’s Mines alive. In the Hollywood movie, you can bet on it.
