Explosive Atmosphere: Eye of The Needle by Ken Follett

It’s the summer of 1944. England has had enough of war. The atmosphere is tense and bottled up. Denizens of the city are frustrated with food rationing. They spread margarine thinly on a slice of bread but they dream of meat when there is none. Characters bicycle around because they don’t have petrol to operate cars. They engage in one-night stands because of gas bombs overhead dropped by German planes. And it’s only to be expected in this explosive atmosphere if sex is combine with more than a little violence.
