Dora and Edward liked to get their hands dirty with spying for Churchill. But they never knew what dirty was. They never visited the oil patch in Texas. Today we zoomed out of over-priced, boomtown Midland, Texas where they charge $3.00 for a paper thin paper towel roll and insist that you pay $600.00/night to stay in some of the very ordinary motels such as La Quinta, which is supposed to be a budget chain. We ended up in thoroughly southern Abilene. A few stray pump jacks sped past at the beginning of the trip and gave way to windmills and Ozarka water. Soon pump jacks were replaced by rest stops with clerks who spoke with a soutnern accent and acted more polite. At dinner we dined at the Olive Garden in the Abilene Mall. Outside they boasted an arrangement of American boxwood. When you see boxwood, you know you’re in the South.
