Dora and Edward had great adventures everywhere from Moscow to Berlin to Lisbon to Egypt. But even they never encountered a wild and woolly Texan. Nor did they drive from Van Horn to Midland as we did today, watching the Texas Mountains vanish in just as few miles as we made a dramatic turn off I-10 to continue the rest of the way on 1-20. Instantly the landscape became flat. We’d entered the Permian Basin. Suddenly pump jacks took the place of yucca. Oil refineries confronted you in place of dark, black volcanic cones.
