Malcolm Blair-Robinson’s new novel, Hitler’s First Lady, reminds me of Leo Tolstoy’s classic 19th century novel, War and Peace. His story concerns the lives of one family and their friends and acquaintances wrapped up in the tumults of 20th century Britain and Germany during 2 world wars. The family, part German and part British, is torn apart by the conflicts that test their mettle and make them realize who they really are and what’s most important to them. The main character, Lise, born to wealth and affluence, finds that she plays a critical role in World War 2. Which man she chooses to stay with might have determined the actual outcome of the conflict. It falls to her son, Saul, to do what she cannot –reunite the factions of the warring family and finally make peace.
