Too Sacred For A Photo — The Magna Carta 9/6/12
This past July we took a shore excursion from Southampton to Salisbury/Stonehenge. While in Salisbury we spent all our time at the Salisbury Cathedral. There was supposed to be no flash photography inside. I did the same as last September when the same prohibition showed up in the Saint Francis Basilica in Santa Fe, New Mexico — I took video footage. Now I’m editing it on my computer. It’s some of the best video of he trip, and I can take screen shots to create snapshots that I never took at the time.
However, there’s one big lacuna in my photos — the Magna Carta. The Cathedral displays one of three copies in existence. There was a sign about no photography, so I put away my video camera. But I wonder what harm it could have done to the document.
Salisbury Cathedral should get more up to date on technology.
