PictureJuarez, Mexico seen from I-10 going through El Paso

Dora and Edward fought their way through the wilds of New Mexico fending off German spies looking for the A bomb during WW2. Edward and Lawrence had a busy time of it hiding Lawrence maps in New Mexico during the Great War. But none of them had our experience today driving from El Paso to Van Horn on 1-10. We left behind the green Rio Grande Valley with a last glimpse into Juarez, Mexico, as we climbed into the mountains of West Texas. Towns such as Socorro, Fort Hancock and Sierra Blanca became few and far between. We got reacquainted with Texas rest areas where there is no regular parking and you have to parallel park next to the picnic area. The border guard added to the wilderness feel by stopping traffic and askng if we were citizens or outlaws from the wild west. Rocky mountains with yucca shot up next to the highway. We finally reached the outpost of Van Horn which was our destination for today. Where do we eat dinner? The Van Horn Cattle Company, of course. That sounds appropriate for Texas, doesn’t it? And what happened when we got there? A posse of outlaws almost made away with us, that’s what.
